    DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

The question: can a DVD Drive be mounted vertically?

    The background(/waffle):
I've got a few ideas for my Mountain Mods Twice7 case.

It's a 14" cube. It's divided into two "sides", let's say LHS (Left Hand Side) & RHS for easy reference.
    • LHS has the motherboard, components, etc.
    • RHS: Back: PSU (bottom), fan (top). Front: fan slot (bottom) w/ 3 HDD rail, 3-bay 5.25" slot (top).

The case has three acrylic panels, left, top and right.

I'd like to replace the the top "panel", which is currently acrylic, to a Metal panel which has numerous 5.25" bays which fall vertically into the (top of) RHS of the case.

(20090403 Edit:- RHS: Top: 5+ 5.25" bays. Bottom: back: PSU (as before), Front: Fan (as before).)

If my idea works, it would use up a lot of space on RHS. I don't think I could get the DVD Drive into the bottom of the case - the case is 14" (cubed), and there's a PSU at the bottom, so there's not a lot of clearance.

I want to know if a DVD (and later possibly a Blu-Ray) Drive can be mounted vertically, with abilities to read and write retained.

I am also looking for comments on my case idea, if you can understand it...

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

i think it depends on the individual manufacturers drives.
    some can, some cant.
though ive never had a problem in the last few years. ive had various PCs on its side (so the CD drive was vertical) and could still read and write to them with no problems.

I appreciate your prompt reply. Do you know - off hand - which drives you used that COULD work?

Obviously, some might be a bit out-dated, now, but it would give me an indication on which manufacturers are good to consider.

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

I had over 10 machines on their side for 5+ years. The drives still ejected from the front of the machine but the CD/DVD played vertically.

All drives were Samsung and had little "tabs" that could be twisted over the CD to hold it in place.

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

ive had a fair few.... LG, sony, samsung, i cant remember ive had so many.
i think as long as you can clip the CD in the drive (like most laptops) or like mycarsavw says, have tabs on the drive, then it should be fine

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

    I appreciate your replies.

I don't know of any drives that you can "clip" disks into, except for laptop drives. Is that what you mean?

Excuse my ignorance, but what are "tabs"?

they're the plastic things on the 4 corners that hold the cd in the tray, some trays have ones that can be extended inwards to hold the cd better

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

All drives have the recess where you place the disc.

On some drives, around the edges there are small plastic tabs which are pivoted on one end and can be turned out to hold the disc down.

Impossible to describe and what is more irritating is I have about 20 CD drives here and now way of getting a picture online to show you

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

Look closely at the right hand side of the disk recess, you will see two small notches, these hold the disk in place when placed vertically.

These are drives for a xbax360, some other drives have notches on both sides so you can mount it either way.

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

yes there are, just not very clear.

Also they are for a 360 which is designed to be stood on its end, so there has to be some way of keeping the disk in place.

A clearer shot, it is a large image though.

Sorry to take ages to reply.

    That answers my question. Thanks.

Thank you also for making reference to the x360. I hadn't "linked" that they have vertical drives. I'll go and take a look at my brother's console to see the "tabs".

    Thank you again.

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

Quick thought: These tabs would allow vertical mounting. What if I were to want the drive upside down? Can you forsee any problems?

    Re: DVD/BR Drive: Vertically mounted?

The 360 doesn't have special vertical drives, thats just the most common picture I found through Google. Most drives have similar small tabs.

As in completely upside down? The disk will drop out. if you do manage to get it to stay in place as the drawer closes, it will likely jam in the top of the drive, especially when you hit eject.

Why on earth would you want to mount it upside down anyway?

If you're going upside down you're going to want a laptop drive - but I'm sure even those aren't meant to be operated upside down.
