    System Build, Phase 2!

Hey guys. Whined a while back about a new system and started with:

    Antec Twelve Hundred
    Corsair 620W Modular PSU
    Asus Rampage Formula
    Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro + Front Bay

The reminents from the old PC are

    Intel Core2Duo E6400
    2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS2 PC6400
    Seagate 750GB 32MB Cache Boot
    3x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint 32MB
    GeForce 7600GT

Now I'm gonna finish it so need some advice.

As far as HDD's go I'm gonna dump the 750GB for 1 or 2 more samsungs and set up a raid.
    What about a Quad core?
    DDR3?
And do I convert to ATI and grab a 4870?

Don't want to spend a fortune but something with some kick, maybe some o/c capability.

    Any suggestions?

Oh, and anyone know anything about solid state hard drives? Any use? Price?

    Thanks guys!!!!

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

DDR3 is too much money at the moment.
For RAID, what to you need; preformance or redundance, for preformance, get RAID0, and for redundance RAID1. Or, get three and use RAID5. *Remember that RAID is NOT a sufficent way to backup any importnat data.
Quad core depends on what you use it for, if gaming, most games are fine of 2 cores, and make little use of the other 2, in a quad, if you are using lots of multi (4) threaded apps, then go for it.
For the GPU, what screen resolution do you use. 22"/1650*1080 HD4850 will probs do, for larger it may be worth a 4870.

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

Well his specs say 2x 19"
It'll depend on usage, for gaming on 1 screen only (desktop on other) a 4830 or 9800gt would be fine
for gaming across both screens I'd say 4870 or gtx260

For just running a desktop across 2 screens the 7600gt will be fine.

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

    ok, so just ordered 4gb (2x2gb) of Corsair Dominator PC8500 1066mhz DDR2.
gonna stick with the old faithful ddr2.

as far as a core and gpu, I do video editing so probably a quad core cause i tinker with lots of things at once, especially when it's sitting rendering. So, would a q6600 be good in combo with the ddr2?

and the graphics, gonna get a real good monitor with high res so probably something good like the 4870 just for the hell of it. moved away from the nvidia chipsets so kind of fancy tryin an ati card.

    any thots?

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

If you do video editing, then quad core is the way to go. But I would look at one of the slightly higher clocked 45nm yorkfield cpus as the current batch of q6600s isnt too great (from what I've heard.) It comes at a higher price, but that is what I would personally do at this stage.
For the graphics, if you are going up to 1920x1200 then I would get something like the 4850x2 or the GTX280/260 OC.
IMHO solid state drives are on the expensive side still, so for me, not worth the outlay until the price drops significantly.

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

have noticed a few people mention i7 systems. found this on dabs.
    Intel Nehalem i7 920 S1366 2.66GHz.
Any use compared to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12M Cache S775 1333MHZ?

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

Yes they are good for something like video editing, however and this is a biggy.
It's a new cpu socket, so you'd need a new motherboard, also they are DDR3 only. (ddr3 is also quite a bit more money than ddr2)
So if you went for the i7 cpu you'd also have to buy a new motherboard and memory.

For video editing a better graphics card is a good choise as it will be used to accelerate video encodeing&decodeing, as to which card . . . I'd say a ati 4830 or nvidia 9800gt ether should get you a good level of acceleration for around £100
But a better CPU is a bigger must. Q9550 for £230 or a q6600 for £150 as a cheap option.
PS you really should of stuck with the same speed ram, as it's always the slowest ram that is going to be your base line for speed and/or overclocking.
ie you've spent a good bit extra on pc8500 but you'll be forced to run it at the slower pc6400 speed (or as fast as your pc6400 can go)

    Re: System Build, Phase 2!

Maybe I'm not getting you but the 4gb of Dominator will replace the 2gb xms2 completely, to be followed by another 4gb shortly.... and of course a 64bit OS, still on 32bt xp. comtemplating upgrading to vista ultimate.

if i grab a q6600 GO and o/c it, it makes a cheap but effective option to the pricier q9550? although £80 isn't a mammoth difference.

will have a look at the cards, don't think I need a massive one as I don't play games so a 9800gt might do nicely.

    cheers for the help all.
