    Cooling options for case

Hello. I have a nice case: Sliverstone TJ08S uATX

I recently bought myself a 4800 series graphics card. This thing gets hot when playing games. When doing anything else my 2 x 120mm fans in the case keep it nice and cool. But when playing a game things warm up. I can feel the top of the case get warm. And my DVD drive gets warm as well, which makes the game disc warm when I eject it out the DVD drive.

Although my Corsair 520w psu is not put out - It does not power any more than 300 w/a I think the PSU may be an issue with the case getting hot as it does get warm in small cases - The fans in it won't automatically speed up until the temps in the case get a lot hotter I have found in other cases.

So, I have a dremmel or maybe I could buy a 4.5 Hole Saw and have a go at fitting a fan on the inside panel. I have not had much experience there so am worried I'll mess up. I won't go near water cooling. Inside the cables are all neatly tucked away.

You all seem really good at modding judging by pics in this forum. What do you recommend me to do? Any other options and if cutting me case up is the way to go, do you have any tips or tricks of the trade you could share? I'm keeping the small case.

Well it seems like the heat is not finding its way out and getting trapped at the top of the case.
So how about adding a blow hole.
Was the first mod I ever did, so not too difficult. If your cuts aren't too clean it can be covered with a fan grill.
I did this with a dremel and file back when cases where made of steel, so should be much easier on an alu case.

    Thanks for the reply.
It is a small case. And no room for a blow hole (I take it you mean a hole on the top of the case?)
The PSU is so close to the DVD drive it was a job fitting the modular cables in the PSU and connecting the Rounded IDE cable to the DVD drive. Without the removable motherboard tray it would have been impossible-ish.

Maybe a cut out at the top of the side panel with mesh or a grille could be done then.
Could add another fan somewhere inside to help vertical airflow.
If your system isn't crapping out from the heat I wouldn't add another noise source though.

    Re: Cooling options for case

    Start off with, checking temps

download the atitool I've found this is one of the best ways to stress out a graphics card and have it chuck out load of heat (good for testing)
you should be able to get temp readings from it with an ati card, although gpuz also has a handy simple fan speed and temp monitor.
you can run TAT or superpi or simular at the same time to give you an idea of maximum heat loads.

couple of questions, what graphics card is this? what cpu? what cpu cooler?

the 48xx are notorious for there heat, one thing I would check is how hot the back of the card gets to the touch. (back of the pcb)
I've found that the back side of my 9800gtx gets rather toasty and now I moved to a p180 case with lower air flow fans (for less noise) the air coming out of the rear and top fans gets noticeably warmer.
Purely from the heat rising off the card.

In your case with the psu at the top, sucking air into it from below is going to be sucking in all that heat, so will get hotter.

Before cutting up such a nice case I'd sugest considering a more powerfull rear case fan, remembering that you'll be adding more noise.
They other thing to consider is adding a side fan to the bottom of the side panel were that nice grill is

Cannot say much more beound that until you give use some more details as to what you're trying to cope with.
I will say that that is a small tight case and there's not a lot of places you can put extra fans.

Can you post a pic of your actual rig, side off?
