What PSU should I buy?

I reckon that I'm having power problems. My el-cheapo, came-with-the-case 400W PSU is trying to power 4 drives, 5 fans, the mobo etc.

The reason I think I am having problems, and I'm yet to prove this for sure, is that my USB modem suddenly loses power after about 10 mins or so. I've checked that Windows isn't set to power down the USB, and I've de-installed and re-installed the modem drivers. The modem was fine before I rebuilt, but with the rebuild I've added three case fans and one Coolermaster Aero CPU fan.

I disconnected one of the fans and a CD drive from the PSU last night and the modem stayed up. So chances are its the PSU.

Question is, what should I buy? It's just your average home PC with a few extra fans and (eventually) lights. Is 400W enough? I see that PSU's are rated for different amps etc. Not being much of an electrician I'm lost. Do I want a 500W PSU, or a 400W with bigger AMP rating, or one that glows green and blue and pink?

What's a good PSU for around the £50-60 mark (or less!)? Don't need anything flashy, I'd rather something solid and stable.

I personally would steer clear of Overclockers UK and go either scan or over-clock (my favourite were I got mine from)

Just wanted to add that it's definitely my PSU that needs replacing. I disconnected one of the fans and now my modem has been happily doing what it does best for about 4 hours now!

Tagan or CWT 550.

I know many a person that sware by the CWT 550 :)

Bit pricier than the Tagan by the looks of it.

Edit: Stop press, scan.co.uk do it for less than £60. Still thinking I'll go with the Tagan though.

id vote for the CWT 550W, mate just got one and its very quiet and stable.

So is it number of Watts I should be looking for or number of Amps or mixture of the two? What benefit would a 550W be over a 480W if you get my meaning?

mixture of two, more valts mean further and stable overclock, i would for the 480W thermaltake, it has a fan controller, if u turn it on full it will get noisy, but quite in low speeds.pics anvalable if u serach for thermaltake 480 in my name

Update - I just ordered the Tagan, and a few other bits and pieces from overclock.co.uk (thanks to Firelord for the link there!).

By the way, I noticed that when I put an order in to SCAN, that they add VAT to both the order AND the carriage. Is that normal? Either way, SCAN would have cost me a tenner more for less stuff!

I would say CWT 550W from scan. I have heard that the Tagan can fail if it run at its capcity for a decent length of time

yes that is normal, you have to pay VAT on everything, the products and the delivery. Over-clock are the same, they quote the inc vat price in little writing next to the product

Seasonic S12 from scan. 600w with damn good reviews from THG.

Got an enermax noisetaker PSU, had it for about 4 months now, with no problems at all, very quiet and safe as.

dont just look at the wattage of PSUs look at the individual rails.
the 3.3, 5 and 12v - 12v should be decently high!

all mine ar above 30a's on each of the rails
