    Re: Project: Spork

Well at the rate I'm going 2109, you can buy the case from both Ebuyer and Scan, but you'll have to mod it your self

    Mini-Update

I've brought the case in for now, the final surface is not smooth, it feels like 2000grit wet&dry
I'll give it a very light sand and a couple more coats tomorrow.

Hung up the motherboard tray, psu plate and a couple of reinforcement beams to paint

Here they are after 2 coats

Camera cannot focus on them correctly and the light is starting to go, so it's starting to have issues with black again.

    Re: Project: Spork

Update: Out of case test build aka Igor, Fetch me a brain!
400x300 images not thumbnailized, the ones that look smaller are just thumbnails, click on them for full sized image

I got the new replacement motherboard today, thanks again to MadduckUK
and here she is a gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 rev1.0

Don't ask why it's a she, she just is.

I got the Asus square cooler of of the box again to test fit it and what did I find lose in the bottom of the box?
A little snappy bag containing 4 bolts with a sticky lable one it saying "AMD Socket AM2" the correct screws
Shame that this gigabyte motherboard does not use the standard metal back plate but instead uses a hard plastic one that the bracket is secured to by plastic push pins.
So there's no threaded screw hole to screw the bolts into

Now when I moved the innards of my girl firends pc into it's new case I also got her a Scythe SamuraiZ cooler as the stock socket478 cooler in her case was driving me nuts.
So I raided the box in the hope of somehow being able to use the AM2 mounting kit that came with it.
No good but there was the old stock478 cooler.

As all I was doing for this test build was getting it running and into BIOS I decided to try out this stock cooler by just haveing it sitting on top.

And now we come to a totally seperate issue, why I don't like intel stock coolers, both 478 and 775
It's not the push pins that mainy people hate, ok not the best of things but it's better than the 478 bracket, amoungst others.
No my issue is Dust matting, due to the shape and design of the stock cooler, after a while a solid mat of fibers, dust and crud builds up on the top of the cooler which blocks off air from the fan, which causes the fan to ramp up in speed to try to force air through to cool it.

Don't believe me? Have a look for yourself.

This is what I'm on about.

As this is only for a quick test, I got out my cheap tooth brush, that I use for multiple cleaning roles, a bit of washing up liquid and some elbo grease.
    This is the resault

What a lovely colour that water is, and there's still some ingound dirt on the cooler fins.

But it's good enough for this test, a spot of thermal paste and it's ready

I went to set it up and hit yet another issue.

This palit card, being rev not rev1 means there's no D-sub, luckly my monitor has DVI but I'm not sure about the monitor this pc is going with. Luckly I have a spare adaptor.

next issue, keyboard, after melting the keys of two keyboards trying to dye them, I don't have any more spare, So out with the magic marker.

Laugh all you like, it works.

Plug in the PSU, use a screwdriver to jump start it and it's up and running.

I had to do a bit of tweeking in the BIOS to reset everything and I realised as I skimed through the manual that for dual channel I need slot 1+2 or 3+4 not 1+3 or 2+4 like on every other motherboard I've had.
Ideling in BIOS the cooler was working very well, 35c, so I unplugged the fan to test there wasn't something wrong.
Temps crept up at 45c I pluged the fan back in, it sped up, temps went down and it slowed down again.
However I noticed a hot spot, heat hitting my hands, at first I thought it was the 8800gt but the heat sink and back of the card is cool.
Northbridge? it's only got a small heatsink on it.
First injury of the day, the exposed fan of the 478 cooler caught my knuckle.
And the north bridge cooler is the source of the heat, it's almost too hot to touch just when idleing in BIOS.
    Digging in my cupboard'o'bits I found an old duron cooler (I think) a 50mm fan on a 50mm x 50mm x 30mm black anodised aluminium heatsink.
Took the fan off and just left it resting on the current northbridge heatsink, actually looking at the duron cooler it's just the right size, if I drill a couple of hole in it it should fit just nicely

As the stock 478 cooler was working so well I decided to try the auas cooler just resting on the cpu.
It took a bit of force to get the stock cooler off, the thermal paste had a good strong hold.
Droped the asus coler on and turned it on again

Works fine and you can see the light from the enermax white led fan I fitted.

I've mainly been sitting here waiting for a courier to turn up to collect this motherboard that's going back . . . still not here as yet
I have done a few other minor things, like sand down the sliver bits on the side details and wash them off ready for painting.

    Re: Project: Spork

Well I've just been for a planning "meeting" with the person for whom I building this pc.
    In a local pub

Yep I'm not exactly sober at this point, not helped buy
    A) not eating (stuffing face with pizza as I type this)
    B) started on the gin before hand

Did manage to clear some stuff up and strighten out some things
As it stands modding costs have pushed this build just over the £200 mark
Without case modding, is it possible? Oh yes a half decent PC for under £200 is doable, although a lot of effort and time is required in hunting out 2nd hand bargins.
The new budget is £250 and it'll be under that although a little delayed, but mainly because of having to sit around waiting for stuff to be delivered.

With this new improved budget I can get buy a new keyboard and afford to put a case window in.
One thing to consider when looking at 2nd hand is postage.
At the moement the only place I can get U-channel from is going to cost me more postage than the cost of the U-channel

The other thing I should mention is the joke that is fleabay postage charges.
Because people have been chargeing excessive postage charges, simply to reduce inital price and fees, fleabay have insisted that some items have free postage.
The resault is that you can buy something for £5+free or £2+3p&p, same item, same seller.

That and beware of "buy it now" on pc hardware and twonks bidding minimum.
99% of the time "buy it now" is more expensive than e-tailors before p&p
On auctions bid your max and no more, there are a lot of twonks out there who will keep upping the current bind by the minimum amount, reguardless that they've pushed it over retail price, let alone 2nd hand value.

here is the current running total
    Motherboard £35 - GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-DS4
    CPU £33 - ATHLON X2 5600+ (2.8ghz)
    Ram £15 - 2x 1gb DDR2-pc6400
    Graphics card £53 - Palit 8800GT 512mb
Case £24 + modding costs ?? not fully added it up yet
Hard drive £xx Spare 80gb sata I had kicking about
    DVDrom/CDRW £xx Spare I have kicking about
CPU cooler £22 - Asus Silent Square Pro
Mouse & Keyboard - Currently haveing issues with it
Total £182 All prices are inc P&P rounded up to the nearest quid

Modding meterial costs + p&p are eaisly £20

    Re: Project: Spork

Update aka I cannot think of anything funny right now

Didn't get much done yesterday as I had to clean up the balcony so we could have a BBQ out there.

    Mmmmm scorched meat

What I did manage to do was pop rivet the back of the case together and the motherboard tray.

There's something about having all the interia of a pc case painted black that looks soooo good

The sharp eye'd amongst you will of noticed I've already managed to scratch the paint, this acrylic paint is just not robust enough, esp when sprayed in thin layers.
It survived much better on my old case because I hand painted it which resaults in far thicker coats but leaves brush marks.
I'm going to have to give it a couple of more layers of paint and get some clear coat to seal it.

The other thing I did was make the filter for the bottom.
I started by lightly sanding one side of the plastic fan guard, I then used some UHU glue to stick on a sheet of gauze.
Tip, to stop the UHU sticking to my fingers as I pushed the gauze down, I used some water to make my fingers wet first.
Another layer of glue then a 2nd peice of gauze at 90 degrees to the first, finally a little more glue ontop and worked with my fingers to make sure it's all sealed in and the gauze is flat.
    Here's the resault

    From the back (glue side)

And a closeup of the double gauze filter

I then put a layer of clean film over it, so I could leave it compressed under a stack of books to dry overnight.

Really impressive resault if I do say so my self

    Re: Project: Spork

Update: Paint & lacquer aka Opps
I forgot to take photo's yesterday, so no pic's of this first bit.

What I did was paint the side details.
After masking off the gloss black sections I tried to paint the sliver areas with copper using my air brush.
The resault was not good the copper paint is coloured by very finely powdered metal or something copper coloured.
This fine powder pigment caused the copper paint to clog up in my air brush and I had to take it apart to clear it out fully.
In the end I had to resort to hand painting it, 5 coats to get the cooper colour solid and even.

Today I went down to my local builder supply shop again, I bought some small nuts so I can fit the Asus cpu cooler bracket correctly
I also picked up 2m of Rubber U-channel (although it's a bit larger than I'd of liked) and a spray can of clear Lacquer.

Saved me a trip to Halfords

I started with a couple of coats of the lacquer over the copper painted areas of the side decals.

    Here's a close up

Personally I think they are loooking very good

Using the air brush I touched up the chipped black paint of the case and covered the rivets.
After an hour that is dry and I could apply 3 coats of clear lacquer.

It was not as easy as that, because the wind has been just enough to be a right pain, blowing the spray away.
I had to get a little too close for my likeing and I did get a little pooling.

Once it's dried I'll get a better idea of the resault.

    Re: Project: Spork

This thread is a shing example of what a man can do if he fully engages his mind into the PC modding frame of mind.

This is a really great build which has given me loads of ideas. Unfortunately I have just rebuilt my PC wth upgraded everything except the case I think I may need to raid the piggy bank sometime soon and set myself up with a high airflow overclocking rig soon

In the meantime I shall continue to follow this thread and remain enthralled in where it shall go next.

    Re: Project: Spork

No I never did, I did try to remove the one on there so I could try to fit the gigabyte cooler, but after removing the screws I couldn't shift it.
I don't know what thermal gunk Palit have used (Actually wondering if they used a thermal epoxy) but that cooler is going no where in a hurry.
However it's not a major issue as it's actually very quiet.
