    Coolermaster Sileo 500

Has anyone used the Coolermaster Sileo 500 case? I am interested in how effective it is in reducing noise and of course foam is the natural enemy of cooling, does this case work well if high end components are installed in it? I am trying for my next to desktop to get a case that is neither the cost the earth, the size of a mountain, a wind tunnel, or an eye saw. Other suggestions are welcome. Yes I know there a few reviews out there however I am more interested in the opinion of people who have lived with a particular case.

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

The main question will be what's the steel thickness like? as that will have a big effect of resonances.

In my experience sound proofing on the side panels and top&bottom like it is in this case don't have a major impact on the temps.

However sound proofing doesn't have that big an impact on noise, does depend on the fans used and there positions.

How effective it is does depend on other variables

Yes, I saw that review and it was interesting, and my thoughts I was not not sure about it due tho the comment about the thinness of the metal which fits in with Pob255's comment. I also saw this one the antec solo which looks a better case, however I like black cases, how easy would colouring the front black be? What would the results be like, having no experience in such things.

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

The Antec solo (p150) is one to look at, it's not cheap but is suposed to be good
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Antec...o-Black-Silver
I seem to remember that the NZXT Hush is also quite good
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/NZXT-...t-Case-w-o-PSU

cannot say from personal experience though.

read up the spcr artical on case noise

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

Depending on your budget the P182/P183 is a great case (and is near black). It takes a bit of work to be at the level of the solo but it's a lovely bit of kit.

If you can live with uATX then the P180 mini is even better for noise and is only £55 at ebuyer. I have both and really do like the P180 mini, its worth a lot more money.

That said I wouldn't worry about the thickness of the metal used in the case.. if its quiet its quiet and SPCR are superbly anal about such things. If you want silence without knowing the actual db.. then any of their basic recommendations are good.

Yes and that's one of the points the review makes, the thickness of the steel is not as good the antec solo p150 and it's not as good in greneral, however it is far cheaper.

The sides, top and bottom of the case are all covered with 1cm thick, soft sound-dampening foam. The side panels are quite thin, by feel, thinner than the 0.8mm typical of Antec steel cases. We'd guess 0.6mm. This is the one place Coolermaster really cut corners.
Coolermaster isn't a name that comes to mind when we think about quiet computing
, so to be honest, we weren't expecting much. We are pleased to report that the Sileo 500 is a humble, affordable, and most importantly of all, quiet case. It doesn't stack up to a top silent case like the Antec Solo/P150, but at $70~100, it is cheaper and perhaps a bit easier to work inside. We wouldn't recommend using it to house a multi-GPU configuration, but just about anything else is fair game.
I don't think it would be a bad choise, esp on a budget, but at the same time one of the antec NSK series with some pax mate would probably cost about the same.

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

I read the article but it only confirms what I said. It's cheaper sure, and thinner so it isn't the best. But cases I have seen elsewhere decribed as quiet if not silent have been torn to peices by SPCR so I'm happy with any of their general recommendations.. since I'm not anal.. apart from with cabling

Umm I think we're saying the same thing here mike, it would be a good choise if you don't want to spend more on the case.
Oh and I definately agree with you on the p180 mini, esp at £55 although for how much longer that offer will be there . . . it's far better than it's original £80 price.

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

They were over £100 when they first came out. I bought mine 6 months ago now I think, maybe longer and it was that price or near enough.

I hope it stays at that price because I want another soon. Got to have a PC ready for Arkham Asylum

I've got a nasty feeling they may be going EOL, after they sold out of the white p180mini, no more have turned up and the listing has gone.

Thanks for the heads up. It might be that the white one looks terrible and no ones buys it though. (That's what I hope).

Can always use the other one..

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

The P180 Mini is great however as I want to put a Xeon w3520/ECC memory in it, so I need a supporting board like the Asus P6T6, so I really need to go ATX size. The price difference between the sileo/solo small enough to be of no interest to me, the solo having suspended drives is rather good, particularly as I will be putting 2 SAS 2.5" 15K drives into it. Now the P183 is a very interesting suggestion, rather more than I was (originally) thinking of spending, I never looked at that range as, I wasn't a fan of the "speed" bump at the back on the original, the flush design is better. The better cooling at not much of a size increase is a good. I wish they can lost the lock and put the button on the outside, seeing as you can push it though the vent anyway, I am never to not sure about the flappy front panels, but that probably a prejudice from the days when games had multiple CDs and no virtual drives did not exist. The colour works better for me too! I looked at the NZXT cases designs are bit fussy for me, and the metal work inside does not seem as good as the Antec stuff. Well its going to be an interesting choice do I splash out or do I compromise, was never very good at the latter.

I guess the orginal price difference in the review was between then P150 and the Sileo as the P150 had a useless power supply that had to be payed for. I also agree the white cases look nasty... as the review put it "Everyone knows black cases are faster."

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

The bump is easily removed, just a bit of plastic that slides in. The P182 has an extra fan making it better for keeping lower bay HDD's cool but harder to fit the PSU and impossible to fit extra length PSU's without removing (hence the P183 not having one).

They do run lovely and cool though, quiet and very very well put together. You can suspend HDD's in any case really, antec just took the decision out of the users hand with the solo

    Re: Coolermaster Sileo 500

You don't have to have the hard drives suspended in the solo, it comes with trays (the same as the p180/182 has for it's middle drive carge) and suspension kit so you can do ether.

Antec doesn't do the solo in white anymore, just black and silver, like the NSK's
    http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=MTk=

There's one in white and silver now called the designer

The PSU's that come with these antec cases are good and a long long way from the standard el-cheapo psu that came with a case.

You may want to consider the Antec Sonata Plus 550, it's the same case again, but with a very shiney black finish and a very good Neo HE 550w modular psu. (which is made by seasonic)
