Should I put in a case window?

    Well as the topic says.

    This is for Project: Spork
I've been kicking the idea of a case window back and forth in my head for a while but I'm just not sure

Here's what the current side panel looks like

The red area is my rough plan for a window.

There will be a hole in the side panel behind the hole I've cut in the plastic side detail, with mesh inbetween them.

I've finished the layout change, so this hole should be just above the cpu area.
It will have a red led fan above and I've got a white led fan inside the cooler and I'm thinking of using a redish purple cold cathode tube inside it as well. So it should all be lit up.
I'm currently painting all the inside frame work matte black.

But should I use a window? or some mesh?

Is that a good shape? or something else?

    Any opinions people?

Pole is multi optional so more than one answer can be combined.

Make it that shape but a little bit bigger, it can extend right and down quite a lot from the looks of things. Unless there's nothing interesting underneath (like a PSU) in which case don't.

    Larger, red and glowing...

Normally I feel windows are a bit pikey but as an alien themed case it show be glowing in some way or form. I say lose the ugly guy in the reflection though

Re: Should I put in a case window?

One thing I forgot to mention, while the side bits are currently black and sliver, I have damaged the silver pain in cutting out the holes.
So I'll be repainting the silver areas copper, as I don't have any silver but do have some copper paint.

Re: Should I put in a case window?

Well I've extended the planned window hole, it's larger, width goes to roughtly inline to where you can see my elbow in that shot.
Goes down to about 1 inch above the circular hole in the detail at that end, and I've mirrored the curve of the detail but upwards slightly, if that make sense, to the lower right corner is about 3 inches above the detail.
The resaulting plan looks good, basically a large square with rounded corners and the bottom is not stright but curved to match the curve of the detail.

I've ordered some 2mm thick clear perspex from fleabay, just need to get some U-Channel to trim the edges.

Re: Should I put in a case window?

My PC has a grey mesh on the side which I have backlit with 2 LED tubes.

Heres a close up of the mesh and interior.

The large piece of mesh is held on by pop-rivets, the two small circles are bolted on.

Of the 2 small circles of mesh on the side, the bottom one has an 80mm fan behind it drawing air in to cool the graphics card (a 9800GTX+). The higher one used to have an 80mm fan behind it to remove the hot air stream from my CPU; but upon upgrading both the CPU and cooler there was no room for it any more

Although I have great temps because the mesh on the side lets a lot of the heat escape / lots of nice cold air to be drawn in, I am not sure how efficient the airstreams or airflow through the case is, meaning I am unsure of any deadspots.

I have read through the project Spork thread, and feel that the case may look good with either red perspex or copper mesh behind the window with coloured backlight. I think that because of the alien look you can probably get away with anything you like, provided you treat the aesthetics witha bit of tact.

I think that you should put some of that big mesh (you know, the 0.5cm squares stuff), died red behind the window

Re: Should I put in a case window?

I doubt it would dye red, you can only dye a draker colour than the base colour and as the plastic coating is black it's not going to be dyeable.

What's more to control the air flow I didn't want a large mesh area, so I got some 2mm clear perspex.

However I may be able to sandwich the perspex and mesh together if it's not too thick, I'll have to look into that.

Here's a pic of the final window shape

The square area is for a ventalation hole matching the hole I made in the side detail.
You can also see the pencil marks of a slightly larger window, however the internal structure made that impossible.
