    Quiet case fans

I've got a Hiper Osiris case, which comes with three 12cm case fans. The airflow and temperatures they provide are quite good, but the noise they produce is starting to get on my nerves (especially when people on skype complain about noise from my side). So I'm thinking of getting some new, less noisy fans.

I had a quick look at the Scan selection, and found some coolers with nice specifications, but I'd like to hear some suggestions of what's good and silent, and what to stay away from My cooling requirements aren't high, I'm only doing some basic overclocking, and the room is rather cold anyway. So the main requirement is near silent operation. And a reasonable price, of course

120mm Sharkoon "Golf Ball" Silent Eagle is a great fan, quite expensive though.

    Re: Quiet case fans

I have a Sharkoon Golfball 1000 and I can't hear it. As to how much air it pushes into my case...er..i dunno..I doubt it'd have any real impact (ATCS840 chassis). it also comes with rubber "bolts" to mount it with.

I should be getting 2 more 120mm fans tomorrow (different make) and I'll let you know how loud/quiet they are as well as who makes them.

    Re: Quiet case fans

I can recommend the Noctua, completely silent in my case.
Have a look at the comments in this (short) thread.

    Re: Quiet case fans

another one for noctua, sharkoon golf balls have all failed on me due to the poor bearing design.

noctua have fluid dynamic bearings meaning they float on oil and never wear out, hence the 5 year warranty.

    Re: Quiet case fans

And I'll repeate what I said in that thread
1000rpm or lower = slient but lowest air flow.
1200ish rpm = low noise, ok air flow
1600rpm or higher = very good air flow but noise to go with it.
RPM tends to be the single biggest factor on both noise and air flow.

Build quality (both strength of material used and ballance of blades), bareing, motor and other funky features all have an effect but to a lesser extent than rpm.

The fans on the Hiper Osiris are 1500rpm, a quick cheap solution would be to slow them down.
If you are running them of a molex connector then you can 5v them fairly eaisly by swapping the pins over.
I personally don't advise 7v mod as it involves feeding 5v current back down the 12v wire to act as resistance, which is not exactly good for your psu, oh and if you have a 3pin to molex adaptor with a fan speed monitor cable, then DO NOT plug it into the motherboard when doing the 7v mod, the resault it's not pritty.

If you're using the normal 3pin connectors then you can get simple cheap resistor adaptors to reduce the voltage (and hense the rpm)
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Zalma...our-3-pin-Fan) 5v
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Shark...RPM-and-Noise) 9.5v

Or of course a fan controller, my sugestions are
Cheap 3 fans, 3.5" floppy bay
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AKASA...2-USB-20-ports

6 fans, 5.25" optical drive bay

Thanks for the tip! I actually remembered that I've got some sort of fan control in bios. I've lowered the speed of two fans (Chassis1 and Chassis2) to about 1000 rpm, which reduced the noise by a lot The third fan (labelled Power Fan) didn't have this option, though, so it's still making some noise.

Is it worth getting a fan controller to fix the problem with one fan, or should I just replace it?

    Re: Quiet case fans

power fan is the PSU feed, it isnt something the bios can change as its meant to be a monitor.

do you have an alternative header to use ?

    Re: Quiet case fans

As GoNz0 said, the "power" header is for psu's then have a fan monitor only cable, so you can set an option in the BIOS to sound an alarm if the PSU fan stops working.

If you don't have a 3rd spare header you can control then I'd sugest the Akasa fan cotroller I linked to in my other post, it's a very nice and cheap, 3 fan controller, also gives you an additional 2 frot USB ports if you have a spare usb header to use on your motherboard.

I've just done a quiet build for my parents, and have one on the cpu cooler (my old TRUE revision A) as an interim measure until I get a Noctua P12 tomorrow, and it's surprising how easily you can hear it, even though it's buried inside the case.

It's hardly surprising for a 2000RPM fan though!

    Re: Quiet case fans

    That's very intresting.
Bit dissapointed they only tested the fastest Scythe S-FLEX, no one I know of bought that model S-FLEX, only the 800rpm and 1200rpm

EDIT: also want to note they used the Sharkoon SE golf ball fan, not the standard one, the SE version is more expensive, comes with a modular cable system and I think it's got an improved bareing / imporved blade ballanceing to reduce bareing strane & ware

dB is not a good absolute measurement as it can be influenced by all sorts on environmental factors.
And it does not take into account pitch
It is a good releative test, ie you can test two items in the same way and say which is "louder"
note: " " for a reason, that being pitch, while two things at the same dB may be the same, but if the pitch is different then one can sound louder to the human ear.

Another thing to take into account is vibration, which that review does not mention, denser and/or thicker plastics flex less which reduces vibration*
    As does better blade ballanceing.

*vibration is often caused by slight imballance in the fan blades causing it to want to wobble as it spins, a soft/thin/springy plastic will not only allow this but also but may increase it, that causes the frame of the fan to vibrate, this will then be transmitted into the case.
A more ridged frame will resist the twist/wobble and reduce the overall vibration.
If you fan is attached to a nice large flat surface, like a side panel, it will resonate increaseing the noise created by the vibration. ie the side panel can act like the skin of a drum and the rest of your case like the body of a drum

Simple by ear comparrison vibration test.
With the fan on, carefully (fingers and fast spinning blades don't mix) hold the fan by it's frame, if the vibration is very bad you'll feel it, now stand the fan (while still on) on a hard flat surface (eg a table) you'll hear the difference, the greater the difference the more the fan is vibrateing.

The worst fan's it's ever been my displeasure to own, where some super cheap ones from Scan (xcilo I think) the blades where just flat sheets glued onto the fan hub with a light weight flexable frame.
Hiddious vibrations, when held I could really feel it, stand it on my floor (laminate) and BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, plus they would vibrate so much they'd actually "walk"

    Re: Quiet case fans

Heard very good things about noctua and scythe however for a cheap option the akasa 17db near silent ones are pretty quiet. I have the smokey blue one and I was impressed. Although not silent its not far off and its much quieter than the silverstone ones that came with my case (also 1200rpm) for £4.50 its pretty good. Just another option.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/120mm...value-case-fan

Says 1400rpm but I'm pretty sure they are actually 1200rpm (well thats what mine is running at without changing any settings.)
