    usb panel sockets?

I put a pc into a machine cases, basically a big box which hangs off a machine.
I put usb sockets in the front panel. I wondered if you could get cheap wireable
    usb sockets?
I got some cheap motherboard remote sockets and extended the
cable, works but is not neat and the socket is moulded so I couldn't completly
    remove the original wiring.
I did see them somewhere but they were 20 quid each socket!

I didn't find any so had to resort to making my own, have a photo somewhere, I had a machine in a rack-mount and the client wanted the back panel at the front, had to extend everything.

    Re: usb panel sockets?

I had another look, and found pcb sockets for 40p. I spose I will have to make a little
bracket/pcb to screw tot he panel to hold them. I found some that looked very industrial complete with screw on covers, they cost a fortune though. Half the problem is know what to search for.

    Re: usb panel sockets?

    Ok found the pictures,

Its actually an extension for two rack mounts, with vga, dvi, usb and ethernet for both.

Most parts where sourced from Maplin.

The USB plugs where PCI plates that plug into the motherboard. these where spliced to some cheap usb A=>B cables bought from ASDA and mounted to some 2mm aluminium plate, which is turn mounted to a thicker aluminium rackmount blanking plate

A bit embarrassed about the shocking finish, but was a rush job!

    and this

Farnell may also stock them (although I haven't looked)

    Re: usb panel sockets?

Yes farnell have similar if not the same. they didn't last year, it's more likely that I couldn't find them; I did look pretty good though.
My set up looks much like the pick in the post above, cables spliced into cat5. first one I did, I heat shrinked each individual wire then the lot in another heat shrink, looked like a shrink wrapped pinapple;-)

The two USB sockets are below the screen on the right. I still need to sort out some printing/labeling/engraving for the switches, I can remember what they are sometimes.
