    Modders and metal bashers...which Dremel?

I'm looking at getting a Dremel, question is battery or mains? Is there any difference in power? What is the battery life like, does having a mains lead detract from useability?

    Choices at present are

    https://www.screwfix.com/prods/91924...emel?source=aw

    or

    http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/s...duct&R=6877345

    Thanks!

yes, but I keep on breaking them.

1st was mine (not actually a dremel, cheap maplin POS!), the 2nd was my dads (shhhh, haven't gotten round to replacing it yet)

So let me know how you get on, I'll need to buy two at some point!

I have an older cabled one, a really nice design feature is that you can easily change the motor brushes when they burn out. I also converted my one to a keyless chuck.

Dremel 300 - Works a charm, plenty of 3.2mm (iirc) bits around to give you lots of variety.

Mine works wonderfully and i've just bought another for my dad for christmas

Good to hear taktak, I just ordered one for around £35 on amazon. Does it come with good enough cutting bits (you can tell I'm experienced )?

Re: Modders and metal bashers...which Dremel?

It all depends on which one you order, some come with 30 others come with 60, the cutoff discs don't last too long if you give them something tough (i was going through 5 or so per foot of cutting on alu) but they're not designed for that, i bought some diamond cutting discs which just wizz through and last for ages

Don't buy the official dremel stuff though, i'm happily using silverline/toolstream bits through work (i think they're open to the public too), silverline are a bit crap when it comes to tools, but for things like dremel attachments, you can't really get something like that wrong... search for hobby tool, and click hobbytool 105 pc, then it brings up all of them

    i spent ~£10 and have loads of cutting/sanding/grinding discs/drums

obviously a dremel will never beat the appropriate tools but it's nice and handy for lots of different small jobs

I've bought my dad a chainsaw sharpening tool too, looks perfect and quicker way of doing it

Re: Modders and metal bashers...which Dremel?

I'm looking to mod the antec 300 so steel is what it will be cutting through (most likely the motherboard tray rather than the side panel). I won't be going through miles of material so I'll maybe just get 'refils' depending on the price of a diamond-edged blade.

Re: Modders and metal bashers...which Dremel?

I've not used diamond discs but decent reinforced cuttings discs make a major difference when cutting.

When I did project spork I learnt the difference the hard way, bought a load of cheap discs, I was going through them at a very fast rate (and shattering quiet a few)
I then paid twice as much for half as many decent discs and it was soo much better

decent discs on the left, cheap nasty discs on the right. (click on pic for large version)

Buy cheap/decent I don't mean brand but base cost, diameter, thickness and reinforced or not.
something like £12 for 10 discs vs £8 for 25 discs, but each decent disc was lasting me the same length of time as 6 cheap discs and cutting so much smoother.

Re: Modders and metal bashers...which Dremel?

Thanks for the comments guys (and more welcome )

My concern was whether the mains cord would detract from the useability (particularly intricate work).

I looked at a cordless version today and they are quite heavy (with the battery attached) and as Pob255 says, they are double the cost - and this will be for occasional use - and mainly cutting metal.

So on those grounds I am tempted to go for the mains version. Any compelling reasons why I might consider the cordless version?

You're weird and have excessive amounts of spare cash as well as the ability to foresee when you will want to use the dremel so that you can put it on charge for hours prior to usage, plus only wanting to use one for a short length of time.

If this is you, get the cordless...

If not, be sensible and get the corded

Battery operated tools are just clunkier and you have to remember to charge them, with corded you just whip it out and get on with it. Also you don't have to deal with the deterioration of the battery over time.

It's better to get the corded and some decent discs and have £20 left over than spend oodles on the cordless just because it means you can spin around in circles...
