    Project 101

So, this will be my first proper mod... let's hope it turns out good! I thought I might make a log, as I do like to read and get ideas from the logs of others. If even one person can take something away from this log, then it's worthwhile ;-)

The case in question is the legendary Coolermaster ATC-101! For those of you who are too young to remember this model you can find a review HERE. For those of you who do, well... you're old!

I bought this case on it's release over 10 years ago, and it has remained a prized possession ever since. However, the time has come to bring her up to date, and as beautiful as she already is, I believe I can make her even better! Liquid cooling is on the menu of course, and although I have previously water cooled in this case on the 939 platform, the case stayed very much intact. This time however, I have an idea, and I'm going to implement it!

    ************************************************************************************

Try to bear with the pictures as best you can; Whilst I have patience in many areas, taking pictures is not one of them. I'd rather be modding than snapping if you know what I mean. I am happy to clarify on any points that the pics don't cover btw, so if you have any questions please ask!

I will be updating the log as and when I am able to, and will hopefully add some pics of the beginnings very soon.

    Re: Project 101

So here's a few parts of the case after dismantling. Bit of a pain in that half of it was actually riveted together. Had to go buy a rivet gun today!

And yes, that is a NewQ Platinum in the pic there, again for those of you old enough to remember it. One of the first in the UK I might add , and it still works!

Here are the racks for the 5.25" and 3.5" devices. You will note that they have already been marked with pencil for cutting. The bottom section normally houses an 80mm fan on a pivot, but I have a nice HWLabs GTS360 in chrome that'd look a treat slipped under there!

Here you see the same parts after they've been attacked with a jigsaw and given a wash... Don't worry if you can't quite work out what's supposed to be happening here, it will come together. Trust me, I'm a doctor!

The case floor ready for the next phase

After seeing so many trick WC rigs it was only a matter of time. I decided the first phase should be to get the inside sorted. I really like the look of the black interiors I've been seeing a lot of lately, as it really draws the eye to the components, rather than being distracted by all the ali/steel in the case. There's no way I can paint this case, or get it powder coated, or anything else equally as barbaric, I just can't do it! Not to my 101 I had some vinyl left over from another project and thought what's the worst that can happen? If I don't like it, I'll just take it off! So here it is, beginning to take shape.

The vinyl has been applied to the internal surfaces only, I've not yet decided what I'm doing externally, but what I do know, is that I'm really bored with brushed ali...

    Bring on the vinyl!!

    The front before

    And after

    DVD Re-Writer

    Drive racks

    This evenings progress

And a sneak preview of how it'll look when all of the internals are wrapped and the case reassembled

If you're curious, what you see above is a Gigabyte EP45-DQ6, HD4350, C2D E4600 and 8Gb PC6400. This will not be the final component set of course, but it's what I've been running media center on

Anyway, it's proper late, so I'm heading off to bed. I hope you can see where I'm headed now and enjoyed reading and will update the thread with any progress as it's made.

Wow vinyl does look pretty good, gives off a sort of glossy finish to it too and I imagine it won't attract too many fingerprints; win-win situation!

    Re: Project 101

Yeah, it does have a semi gloss finish Think it should reflect the cathodes nicely. Not looking forward to the rear section of the case mind, gonna take a little while methinks.

    Re: Project 101

Tonight I'll be covering the case framework, psu support, and depending on the time, the removable m/b tray. Pics to follow...

    These are the offenders

    First one covered ;-)

    Re: Project 101

Finally got them done. This is the smallest piece getting it's suntan. This was without doubt the hardest piece to wrap so far

After wrapping and cut from the sheet

All the case framework wrapped and ready to go

Think I'll probably leave it there tonight. The PSU support and M/B tray are on my hit list for tomorrow!

There will be no floppy drive in the build. I haven't used a floppy, except for flashing, for absolute donkeys. Never fear tho', the floppy bay will come in handy...

was sceptical about the vinyl at first, but is looking quite cool. Not cool enough for me to attempt something like this, but looking forward to seeing the finished product

So am I! The vinyl is just the first part of the master plan You will note that I haven't really discussed the component set yet, this is deliberate as I just love surprises!

    Re: Project 101

I've always found vinyl a tricky thing to work with, takes a lot of practise to get it right and air bubble free, esp on non-flat objects.

There will be no floppy drive in the build. I haven't used a floppy, except for flashing, for absolute donkeys. Never fear tho', the floppy bay will come in handy...
OK I jst read that as
I haven't used a floppy, except for flashing, for Abusing donkeys.

    Time for bed me thinks

These are the parts I'm going to be attempting today

    Progress so far...

And let me tell you, that PCI panel was a Not that I thought it would be easy for a second!
