    Need to lose 200 rpms.

Hi guys, these are the 3 things i have, all from zalman

    ZM-MFC3

    ZM-RC56

    ZM-F3 LED

the problem i'm having is the pwm fan connector on the fan controller.
I want the fan to run off of the controller but at 800 rpm, which is my "happy noise",at the moment using the ZM-RC56 (middle picture) its running at just over 1000 rpm which is only 200 rpm but enough to annoy me.
I tried a proper PWM fan but found the high pitched whine louder than the actual fan .
What could i do to lower the rpm's by another 200 ?
Bear in mind the other 3 connectors are controlling differing fans so i can't add this one fan onto a split cable.
I'm seriously looking at buying a cheap n nasty fan controller from elsewhere just for this one fan.
    Thoughts and help appreciated.

Replace the resistor in the ZM-RC56 with one of a higher resistance, currently in there is a 56ohm I think, try a 68 ohm instead
should only cost a couple of pence if you go into maplin

ok,i'll have a look at maplins website and ask my dad to go round and get one,i'm in Germany and they have a distinct lack of maplins and i have no idea how to ask for one in German.

I'm not sure they do resistors individually on their website. ask your dad to go in store and ask, they should sell them individually in their shops, and whilst he's there, I'd get him to pick up a couple more higher resistance resistors, just in case the 64ohm doesn't cut it

Re: Need to lose 200 rpms.

ok i put a 64 ohm one in and it didn't change anything ,appears to be quieter but the fan readout stays the same.it might be the fact that its attached to the pwm connector by 3 fans instead of 4,i dunno, suppose i'll have to get another one with a higher value.

Re: Need to lose 200 rpms.

I got a few of these hooked up to mine. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Zalma...our-3-pin-Fan) Sets it down to 5V. According to my motherboard sensors my fans are now spinning at 750 rpm down from the original 12V 1500rpm. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Xigma...-F1253-LED-FAN

Or are you just running it to the motherboard via the resistor adaptor?

The problem you may hit is the ZM-RC56 already brings the voltage down to 5volts increasing the resistance may drop the fan below the minimum voltage it needs to actually start.

Your best bet is to replace the fan with one that has a lower rpm to start with.
From my look at verying cheap LED fans I found the Coolermaster one to be very good
http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/prod...de=HFC-CASE12B (although I got mine off of fleabay for about £6) even when I droped it down to 5v there was virtually no motor noise. (I had to hold my ear within a couple of cm to hear a slight ticking)

Re: Need to lose 200 rpms.

yea i have the resistor connected between the fan and the ZM-MFC3 fan controller, whilst not that loud at 1000 rpm, i can hear the extra 200 rpms of air being pushed through.I've always tried to run my fans at 800 to keep the noise down, looks like i may have to buy another controller of sort.
It must be something to do with hooking a non pwm fan up to the pwm connector on the controller.

Re: Need to lose 200 rpms.

If you just plug the fan into the controller how far can you lower it?

I doubt a different controller will help because all you will be doing is lowering the voltage and there's a good chance you'll hit the point where the voltage is too low to start the fan before you get to the 800rpm you desire.

Re: Need to lose 200 rpms.

ok i think we have a slight miscommunication here.
the fan is plugged into the pwm port of the fan controller but it is not a pwm fan.
the manual states that rpm control is not available when a 3 pin fan is plugged into the pwm port.
however it does show the rpm that its running at.
what i need is a way to lower the rpm so that it shows 800 rpm instead of the 1040 its now running at with the new resistor as suggested.
if i use the fan in a normal 3 pin port on the controller it will go as low as 700 quite happily.
maybe another resistor is needed to lower it to 800 rpm but i have no idea of these things.
Thanks for all the help btw.

Re: Need to lose 200 rpms.

I was inspired and annoyed at the sounds coming from my new case (NZXT M59).
I had filled all the fan mounts with blue led 120mm fans and had already ran the two top fans off of a molex with a 5v mod, but it was the two standard NZXT fans that came with the case that where annoying me so I decided to do something about it

Both my NZXT fans where plugged into my mobo headers and speedfan was reporting around 1300RPM.
I had a rummage around in my parts draw and found some 100 ohm resisters.
I put them in series on the +ve line of the fans (middle, red wire) and now the fans have been reduced to around 800RPM

Now there is still some fan noise, but its to an unobtrusive level.

Hope this can be of some help to our OP

Don't want to hijack but what fans are you using?

The fans that I hacked where the NZXT 120mm fans that came with the case, I'm afraid I don't have any more info but whats on their website:

"Immense Performance: 5 fan capability (side 120mm LED and rear 120mm exhaust included) Included 9-fin rifle bearing NZXT fans rated at 42CFM and 23db"

The rest of the mounts are populated by two 120mm blue LED Coolermaster fans. they are a couple years old but look similar to the ones in your fan round up. I've just remembered that the front fan mount is populated by a non led 120mm Coolermaster. This might have to be changed! maybe I'll have to take one of your spares off your hands when your finished with you tests (any thing from the 2nd test would be nice)
