Hmm, what to do with this case?(possible 56k warning)

[ Sorry if pictures dont resize!]

Well basically i uncovered my Chieftec Dragon(i think?) case while looking for things to flog on ebay to purchase my phone . Since im thinking about selling my cm690 i was gunna have a look at possibly using this case while i look for an mATX board, its easier to cary than my c690 even if it is 2kg heavier ha.

So far ive come up with a list of things id like to get the case to do:

    1. Fit 120mm fans instead of 80/92mm
    2. Some form of cable management
    3. Hard drive suspension
    4. Sound proofing/dampening.
    5. Possibly new colour scheme

Now the first one is really the most important one for me cause 80mm fans arent quiet and thats kinda what im looking for right now with my system. If anyone can help me with idea in how to achieve this then i would appreciate it.

here are some photos of the dragon:

This is where i had my hard drive when my old system was in here, worked very well however i would like to try a more secure method of quieting the drives .

For sound proofing i was going to just get some of that foam padding from somewhere like scan and fit the entire case with it but im not very imaginative with all this modding.
Cable management is something i think would be simple with this case i think, i could use the top part of the case and possibly just cable tie them to the top of it.

With the fans there is 80mm ones in the hard drive cages and i cant see how i would mod them to support 120mm so that part is a lost cause. However the 2 rear 80mm could somehow be changed and possibly i could mod the case to fit more 120mm fans, perhaps the top?.

Since its an old case i am willing to try anything with it pretty much, my dad has all metal work tools and any other DIY thing u can think of so i should be able to perform any task(with his help ), i would attempt the paintjob but it still is pretty nice and i know i would make it look really bad (i like black more but i guess ill live with it!).

    Any help is appreciated .

Is the right hand side panel riveted on? or is it removable?
Cannot remember on this chieftec model.

I do love the chieftec cases, they are so solidily constructed.
We still get them at work the small mATX ones.
    http://www.chieftec.com/bs-02b-b-sl.html
Only thing that lets them down for me it the detachable hard drive cage, because it slides backwards, if you got the original socket 775 stock cooler (not the later half height one) then it's a right pain to get a hard drive in or out because the cooler is in the way.
This is all bacause it's a little bit shorter than most mATX cases so the drive cage hangs over the top of the motherboard.

Re: Hmm, what to do with this case?(possible 56k warning)

Right hand side from what view? Mine(front on) or rear?. Both sides are detachable.

Yes chieftec make amazingly high quality cases, this was bought secondhand from my dads friend when he was selling his older system so got it all for £100 (fully working rig aswell, bargin at the time). This has been thrown about but i dont worry because i know it will be fine, feels solid too!.

So no ideas how i could manage to attach 120mm fans to this case?. If not, worth investing in good 80mm fans? If so, what ones .

    Thanks.

could you get a clearer shot of the back?? and how handy are you with a dremel and jig? there is a way of converting it to a 120mm blowhole at the back

oh ive a plan alright if the case will let you, the idea is to build a new "backplate" to get a 120mm fan in there to replace them 80mm, ive done it now twice both times it worked a treat and the first time i had issuse so i had to change things which i can see happening here but im sure we can work somthing

Re: Hmm, what to do with this case?(possible 56k warning)

If the right side panel is removable (the one behind the motherboard tray, then you can cut some hole is the tray for cable management.

There should be enough room to put a 120mm where the current two 80mm fans are in the rear.
Although you'll need to do something about the gap left over.

Here's a idea for you, turn it into an bottom to top air flow design, like the raven 2
You could fit a couple of the Antec BIG BOY 200mm or the silverstone 180mm fans in the top.

Cut a big hole in the bottom and turn that into a large air vent, which you could filter.

If you could get a detachable motherboard tray, then you could basically bolt that onto the existing tray inside the case (pointing up)
And then cur out the entire motherboard section from the back and replace it with a single large plate.

Harddrive are more tricky, ideally I'd look at some form of 90 degree vertical storage system, like in the Coolermaster RC-1000 Cosmos, but that may be a bit to complex.
If you could put a fan in front of each cage and cover them, to block upp all thoes holes so the air is forced over the drives.

The kit from sharkoon http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Shark...-components%29 has some handy rubber grommeted screws for hard drives, athough you'll have to expand the size of the current screw holes to get the gromits to go in neatly (speaking from experience here)

Right guys, heres some photos taken by my DSLR so they should be useful!.

Will think about putting it a top to bottom airflow but isnt there an issue with the intake fans? Being so low on the ground there wouldnt be very affective, would they?

Re: Hmm, what to do with this case?(possible 56k warning)

if you go top to bottom then yes you might want to think about getting some feet to raise it, but bare in mind most dust and crap will be sucked in from the bottom...if you do decide to put a fan in the back you will have no problem,

    ""edit""

the back is the same kind of setup as my pipeline so if you get stuck i can easily help you out

Re: Hmm, what to do with this case?(possible 56k warning)

    That's why I said
Cut a big hole in the bottom and turn that into a large air vent, which you could filter.
By a big hole I mean turn the whole bottom of the case into a vent, with just a couple of cm left around the edges for something to fix a big filter onto.
If you can put a new motherboard tray inside pointing up wards then you can near totally seal the back and front keeping the air flow all focused through one point, which is filtered.

You could go full raven2 and put the fans in the bottom with a vent in the top, however the PSU support rails may well limit your possible height.

The reason for this idea of mine is to reduce noise greatly (just 2 or 3 BIG fans) while should still "in theory" perform well.

Of course you could just chuck a bunch of water cooling in it

You could paint the insides black, or can you get chrome effect spray paint?
A full red and black build would be nice, all components red and black, red led fans, case black outside & red inside.

Re: Hmm, what to do with this case?(possible 56k warning)

Right ive spent a couple minutes to have a look and actually see what i can do, heres some pictures of the black interia. Im really disappointed with myself because i completely forgot to sand down and wash down the surfaces, i also am annoyed with the whole fact i ran out of paint. How would i go about getting rid of this paint (keeping all the interia INTACT) cause then i can apply a nice black or red coat on a clean surface .

Any recommendations for colours to use guys? And what type of spray paints are best?.

Now heres for the latest shots of the case, theres a lot of them .

Here i think the black looks pretty nice, in the next pictures the flash show up the imperfections but not really noticeable in person >

The fan will be at the top, i can fit 2x120mm fans but i think the PSU at the top would block one of them and make it useless so i will stick with just one(pictured a fan lateron).

This is where the hard drive cages go, they slide in those tray type things. I cant think of anyting to do with these so i might just get a really quiet 80mm fan.

I managed to fit a 120mm fan where the 2x80mm fans were originally, however im unsure how to make the mount for the fan.. what tool should i be using? And what action should i take to ensure there is enough room for the fan to perform ok? I was thinking cutting a hole in the back but i really dont want to if i dont have to.

Close up of my duck tape attempt .

120mm fan on top as mentioned earlier, unsure still whether having a bottom to top fan system is viable and do able. What tools would be required for this so i can ensure i have them at hand .

The 5" bays, it looks a lot better inperson and probably is the nicest part that i painted, must of been a nice clean surface .

Bottom fans, enough room for 2x120mm fans unless the motherboard comes down to close so will attempt to move my system over partially to check room. (how would i sort this bottom out?)

Showing other bit where the 120mm fans would go

All the parts salvaged from the system and some of mine (i have the sharkoon kit btw , found it again after losing it ages ago), one of the hard drive cages are green because i was out of black and thought id try it and see if its a nice green, sadly it wasnt so this will need another coat .

    (hit limit of images >.<)

From the front inside the case

    Side of case (behind tray)

Toying with the idea of having a fan stuck in the top bays, still unsure but its an option.

A 120mm in the top bay is a possible option, something like the Scythe kama bay

You should be able to remove the whole plastic front bezel, there are some plastic tabs/clips along each side (6 or 8)

In this photo, there's one in the middle of the upper of the two hard drive cage areas.

Ok here's a new plan, after realiseing thoes hard drive bays are held on by shelf type things.
Looks like they are held on by rivits, so get the front bezel off, drill out the rivits, this should let you reposition them, to make room for two 120mm fan in the front.

Fitting the rear fan, personally you need to cut a hole in the case, What I'd do is cut out an area far larger than the fan then make some form of detachable rear plate to hold the fan and cover the hole.
(Like the way the PSU is currently mounted on a detachable plate)

If the gap between the top of the case and the top of the psu is 40mm or more, then there's more than enough space for a fan above the psu.
