    Unhappy Intake fans?!

    Hiya guys!!

Need some help!! I Have a Coolermaster ATC-210 case. Very happy with it, just that IT HAS NO INTAKE FANS!!

So... First of all, do I need one?! Secondly, how do I add one?! It has absolutely no place behind the HDD's... Do i really have to make holes in my side panel!?

    THX!!!

I thnk that, in order to get the lowest temperatures, you should have as many intake fans as exhaust fans, so that you get a decent airflow. Not familiar with your case, so I can't comment on it.

Not necessarily. As long as there is enough ventilation in the case for the blowers to pull the air through it should be ok. I think a 1:1 ratio is a bit too much, personally.

    Angry

Hmmmm... To be more precise, I DO have two exhaust fans. My case really gets dusty, becoz the exhaust are pulling are in through every little hole in my case!! Even in the front, on my CD-drives, dust gets piled up!!

    Any recommendations?!

well to begin with what are temps like? if they seem ok and you have no probs with stability theres not much point doing nething.

to look at your temps go to the BIOs, shud be in there sumwhere. you can also use software in windows such as Motherboard Monitor 5. http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ theres the link to d/l it if you want it.

    Wink

Nothing special, I think. My case is like 29 degrees, my CPU is 48 idle and 52 under load. Hot little sucker, huh?! Tried a lot to lower the temps, added Artic Silver 5 etc... Can't get lower than 52 under load though...

PS : My CM Musketeer readout for case temp is 32 degrees. The probe is situated near my exhaust fan, near my PSU.

very similar temps to what i get there. mine sometimes goes up as high as 54 under load if my room is very warm.

As your case hasnt got any way of attaching an intake fan it seems like your going to have to do a bit of modding if you want one. Personally unless you want to overclock/you are getting stability probs id just wait until you upgrade and get a new, cooler case, then.

Alternatively you could always buy some new more powerful fans (note nosier!) and see if it makes any difference.

    Thx, iMc!!

Feel a lot better to hear that ur CPU is about the same temp!! I think I'll just wait till my next upgrade, since I have no clue how to add a intake fan myself!! U got any directions to do so? I'll have to make a hole in my case, huh?!

Yep - If you don't have more intake than exaust then dust comes in EVERYWHERE.

Just for the fact that your PC is so much easier to clean, and the fans work better with back pressure rather than trying to suck air out of the case - More intake than exaust is the best method IMHO.

I am surprised that the case has no space for intake fans... But if there isn't space - a 76mm holesaw will make short work of Alu.

Damn... I COULD do that, yeah... Maybe I'll make a hole in my window. Is a 76mm hole enuf 4 a 80cm fan?

Without Blowhole trim - It's perfect.

With blowhole trim - You need the 80mm one.

If you are drilling intop the perspex, get a big, slow drill and do not let the holesaw stop. It can be quite worrying trying to wrench the holesaw free from the melted perspex!

As long as you take reasonable precautions - Everyhing should be OK. I was sure I was going to snap the window in the server. Perspex is REALLY bendy. But it was fine.

My PC was no bother. (Did it 2nd. )

Hi, I've got a similar setup to yours which I'm trying to quieten down - bought a deal of gear from Zalman. Trouble is that, like you, the ole '210 is a nice case to look at but the airflow is crap! Currently, I've got a pair of 8cm Coolermaster 4-blu-led fans blowing in from back and top, and I'm using my Enermax's PSU as the only output. This gives me cpu temps in about the 50-52 degree range with a Zalman flower cooler.

So now I'm thinking of a couple of options:
    1. Cut out the base and put a stonking 12cm and get longer case feet to keep it clear of the carpet, (I know not where to get the new feet)
    2. VERY CAREFULLY Dremel out the 'spare' area either side of the front panel LEDs and install either a pair of 6cm fans or a pair of those nifty YS Tech TMD fans.
    3. Get the unwindowed side panel, (the one backing the motherboard tray), and Dremel this out for a Thunderblade 12cm sitting in the gap behind the 3.5" disk bays. There's a 4-5cm gap between MB tray and disk bays that should provide a wee bit 'o space for airflow, and I'll cut some slots in the disk mounts to allow a bit of airflow through to cool my drives.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going option #3 as it's gives me the least opportunity to screw up - and besides I found a supplier who can still sell a spare side panel.

Of course there's always a Zalman reservator and water-cooling - sigh!

Tip for cutting through perspex (I've tried 3-5mm) with any saw - stick sellotape to one side (doesnt matter which with a jigsaw, top with holesaw... but all around the cuts), this will collect the small shavings of perspex which are the bits which melt. You get a far cleaner edge if you do it this way, and no more wrenching saws free

48-52 seems about right. My setup shows the same, although it seems to go to the 48 'minimum' quite quickly.

I had a mamoth power tool session on my CM-210 yesterday and now I've got castors fitted, (like a server case, and gives good carpet clearance), and a lovely 12cm bottom-mounted intake fan.

Fitting a big fan in this position is a pig though, because of the design of the case - there's a 1cm wide Alu molding that has to be partially removed to aloow the fan to fit.

Now that's done though I should be able to get 70-78CFM pushed into the case with 64CFM+PSU exhausts, as opposed to 64CFM intake at the top, with the PSU as the only exhaust. That should get the temps down!
