    Newb modder advice

So I have a Coolermaster chassis that has such bad designed fan mounts its not funny, where the holes are pressed out for the airflow they havent been raised as every other chassis designer does there flat to the chassis, this on intake fans especialy causes a lot of turbulence and with that a high pitched whistling sound.
So plan is to chop them out and replace with standard wire grills.
Also might do a little more chopping for cable management and if I feel brave a window panel.
Looks like a Dremel might be the best way to do this but wanted advice first, checked enough guides to be confident that if it goes tits up then its user error.
Looks to be a lot of models around, which is the one most people use? and what cutting discs are best to use for chopping steel?

    Cheers

    Re: Newb modder advice

Well Bill Owen currently recomends the Black & Decker RTX Rotary Tool
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNhBLzW5i3o
However I've not had much luck finding one in the UK

I would say any Rotary tool is fine as you're not planning on doing a massive amount of cutting.
Don't worry if it doesn't come with loads of bits because you'll never use them any way.
The only bits I tend to use are the cutting discs and sanding drum (very usefull as an alternative to a file)

Add to that some good reinforced cutting discs.
    eg http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/REINFORCED-CUT...item483a3c57b9

I'll sugest one of these fine wire mesh fan filters http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/120mm-Fan-Filt...item4cef0c4327
I picked up one recently for the 120mm side panel fan on my casecom 6788 and I'm very impressed with it. (note you can get the same one from other places, fleabay just tends to be cost effective for cheap one off purchases over normal online e-tailers)

For cutting out the grill I'd go with an Octagonal hole, basically follow around the edges of the current grill/vent, cut the grill rather than the flat panel, nibble away the excess and finally sand drum/file it stright.

PS I know exactly what you mean, it's a well known fault with the original CM 590&690 they later altered the side panel by pressing out the fan mounting holes to lift the fan off the side panel to sort out the resonence issue.
You can use washers between the fan and the side panel to reduce the resonence.

If you're not feeiling that adventrious you can always just buy the windowed side panel, http://www.coolermaster.nl/shop/prod...roducts_id=240
This has a far better domed mesh vent that doesn't have the resonence issue and replaces the near useless upper fan grill with a window.

EDIT:Mayhem posted about this issue a while back, even included a youtube video to show the issue

    Re: Newb modder advice

Yep, it's a hard rubber cylinder and you get little sand paper tubes.

To fit the paper tubes you losen the screw on the end, slide the old paper off then slide the new paper on, then tighten the screw again.
The screw compressed the rubber of the drum causeing it to bluge out slightly in the middle which holds the paper securely.
Note: you don't want to do the screw up too tightly as you may damage the drum.

I find steel does ware down the paper quite fast though, I need to try to find tungston carbine tubes (ie same stuff used on wet&dry paper)

OH and I forgot a major thing you should buy if you're getting a rotary tool

    SAFTY GLASSES
I cannot really stress this one enough, rotary tools throw out a heck of a lot of grit and metal dust/filings, you do not want that getting in your eyes.
Safty glasses can be got for under £5 so don't skimp on them and think you don't need any.

+1 for safety glasses, I wouldn't have gone near a dremel without them after seeing the power of them.
