    Project - Otherhalf

Yes I'm back and with a new project, ok it's not a great name I'll admit it, this is a bit of a long story.

Iit all started a few years back when I was doing my first major mod, turning an old server case into my main rig, one of the key things was getting the noise down a load so 120mm fans where my main aim.
    http://forums.hexus.net/chassis-syst...e-project.html
It was afterward that I realised that my efforts had been defeated as my other's pc is also in the same room and her cheap case had lots of winey 80mm fan in it.
So I was being drowned out but her pc.

While I didn't want to go through all the hassle of a 2nd mod at that time, so I looked round for a better but still cheap case for her, I found this one.

Ok it's cheap (£20 at the time), thin steel and such, however I do still like the look of it, it's actually quite spacious for an el-cheapo case, a full 200mm wide.
I've seen, and used, nastier el-cheapo cases.
The mesh used in the door+front+side panel do actually do a reasonable job of dust filtering.
The side panel less so, but the multi layers of fine mesh in the door+front do a good job, I often had to wipe off to clean them.

What has this got to do with modding?
Well I was planning on modding it and had been for a while, however the otherhalf hates me going anyware near her pc, she doesn't care as long as it works.
Then a month back now something went "BANG" or at least "Phut" and it stoped working, after digging about and testing, I'm 90% sure it was the southbridge on the motherboard.

So I pulled the hard drives, swaped them into my "old" pc and set it up so she could get back online, in my p180 case.
I'm still debateing if I want that case back or not, so it's left me with the opitunity to finally mod her case I can shift all the hardware over when I've finished.

She likes steampunk so this is a rough theme for the build and slience and general improvement is my goal for it

more to come, however this build has been going in fits and starts, so no regular updates atm and I really must update my system details.

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

for thoes intrested that system was a p4 3.0ghz HT, 4x512mb memory and a geforce fx5200 128mb agp.
It's done a sterling job for quiet a few years, I did consider replaceing the motherboard but it's not really worth it.
Instead she's getting my old e6600 @3.0ghz, 4x1gb OCZ reaper, MSI p35 neo2 and a 7900gs with gigabyte cooler (which is basically the cooler off a 7900gtx)

I was planning to do some more work on the case on Sunday, however I was just far too hung over from Saturday
However here's what I've done so far.

First thing I did was strip it down and clean out the dust, I actually found quite a bit of dust caught between the fan grills and fans. so thoes where the first things to go.

This front grill really does little execpt impede air flow, there's the mesh grill in front of it in the bezel and the mesh door infront of that.

Next is the rear fan mesh grill

and as you can see I got one of Bill's nice steampunk fan grills to replace it. (black)

So out with the rotary tool and lets get cutting . . .

    . . . Umm that didn't go so well . . .

Yes the disc is well and truely jamed in there, I'm still not sure how I managed to do that :? I just couldn't shift it so I got my wirecutters out and hacked out enough of the grill to get the rotary tool bit out.

As you can see the disc cracked and twisted but the reinforcement held it together but at the same time getting tangled and jamed in the grill.

New disc and resume cutting . . . no problems . . . how the heck did I manage to do that the first time?

My standard octagonal fan hole, I find this so much easier to cut out than a neat round hole with a rotary tool.

I then use the cutting disc to nibble out the worst of the material left behind (as I under cut when cutting out a mesh) and realiseing I don't have a file so I finally file it smooth and take off and sharp edges and flashing with the rotary tool sanding drum (I really should see if I can get some silicon carbide paper tubes for it)

repeat with the front grill (without the disc damage and jam)

A final go over with some p600 silicon carbide paper to fully smooth it down, then I poped the case into the shower and gave it a good washing down with washing up liquid and a sponge.

    Looking good.

I've just built a new PC (destined to be my WHS as soon as I get it all running) and the biggest difference came when I installed some Akasa Paxmate sound deadening. Not only did it neaten up the interior, it made the case a lot quieter (less vibrations etc) so well worth the £15 or there abouts

I love the black marker on the DVD Drive front

I had the same issue with my wife's PC but I just bought her a Lian Li PC-V1100B, now I wish I had that case instead!

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

Question; how easy easy would it be to turn the case into a Lian-Li style upside down/CPU down layout?

I was wondering if you could rotate the front panel and the drive bays 180 degrees. the bottom would be the top but you could have a hole for the PSU.

Great to see another world famous Pobmod all the gaffs included!

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

Swapping a pc case like this around, so the motherboard tray is upside down isn't too hard.
You'd need to drill out the rivets holding the motherboard tray and back panel on, turn those around and then drill some new holes to be able to rivet it back together.
If the case was a different layout inside then maybe not.

However that is far more work than I'm going to be doing on this, I do have a more complex case mod that I may be working on in a few weeks time.

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

Update time, ok I'll admit I'm stringing you along this was done a while back just hadn't got around to uploading the photos

    Case feet

The original where pretty nasty, I had padded them with some discs cut out of PaxMate but they really needed to go.

To replace them I nicked the feet off a dead amp from work, as it was heading to the skip.
The original screws wouldn't fit, too small for the holes, so digging around in my bag-o-bits I found some washers, nuts and bolts that where just the right size.

    Much better.

On to the door, now I got another fan grill from Bill and before the pc died I had stuck it to the front of the door to see what it would look like.

I think the mirrored acrylic matches the chrome effect corners very well.
it was just held on with some "tape of the gods!" damn that stuff is good. Why is it not sold in the UK?

I'm currently considering 3 options, 1 be very lasy and just use tape to hold it on, 2 get some shiney bolts and bot it onto the mesh or 3 cut the mesh and recess it so it's flush.
Still not exactly sure which option I'll go for.

My other plans is to use a 120mm amber LED fan in the front which should back light the lower half of the grill quite well then mount some normal amber LEDs in the door behind the top half of the grill to back light that.
    or
Stick with the 120mm non-LED Scythe S-FLEX fan which was in there, use the amber LED fan at the back of the case and just use amber LEDs in the door to back light the grill.

I poped round the home of the parental units today, as I had to drop something off and have a word to my father about another mod project I'm planning.
I mentioned my idea for the amber LEDs and was just going to ask him if he had any recomendations as to which LEDs I should get and from where, when he said
"Does that mean you'll want some amber led's then? Because I've got some you could have."
Turns out he's got a large bag of amber led's kicking about from a job that never needed them in the end.

So first step is to dissemble it.

Each corner is peice is held on by a screw and the mesh it self is held in by tabs of the mesh bent over, flat bladed screw driver to unbend the tabs and a crosspint to remove the screws and it's in two parts.

The original photo of the door and this one show an issue with back lighting the grill, namely there's only one hole in the door behind the mesh, and while you normally cannot see it the moement I try to back light it that's going to show up.
So my plan is to make the hole larger.

Measuring up I've hit a snag with option 3, of trying to recess the grill, the depression in the door is deeper than the grill and the current hole is slightly wider so there would be nothing to bolt the bottom of the grill too.
So my current plan is to cut out a hole as I've marked it and bolt the grill onto the mesh.

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

    Update time.

    Painting plans.

I'm still a little unsure as to exactly what I'm going to do with this case in terms of paint job.
Due to the position under the desk this case will be a window in the left side panel is pointless as the desk would just block it off.
Which is why I originally swaped the side panels over so the mesh side panel was on the right (see the first photo in this thread.)

Atm the case is black (satin matte finish) and what I'm currently considering is continuing the cog theme of the mncptech fan grills in the paint work.

So I started out makeing a pattern (on drafting card) for the top pannel which will be the most exposed after the front, after a couple of false starts, I've ended up with this.

Yet again technical drawing has proven itself to be probably the most useful GCSE I took.

Today I started cutting it out, I cannot find my scalpel so I've had to go with the old faithful a full sized stanley knife.

The full sized stanley knife is a bit too large and clunky for this sort of thing, however I know from experience if you take your time and have some patience you can still get very good results from it (with a fresh sharp blade)

As of yet I'm still not 100% as to how I'm going to paint this, I'm planning on a dark grey to give a fairly subtle effect with the black, however I'm not sure if I should just work over the current paint or repaint it all and if I should do it as a negative or positive pattern.
I may even use a trick I've used before with this card in painting it and glueing then sealing it to the panel . . .

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

Well it's been a while but as I now have a week off the modding is back on

I was planning to do a load of work yesterday, however . . . Yep I just cannot do any build without running into issues . . . I was planning to start of the painting seeing as I've borrowed my mini-compressor and air brush from work (I use it for projector maintenance, aka blowing out all the dust) however it was raining all day an annoying fine rain with just enough wind to blow it into the balcony, so I did other stuff instead.

I started off by masking up the case ready for painting. (photos taken this morning)

I secured the top cog stencil first with squares of double sided tape, the rest was masked off with wide masking tape and one of our lovely pink recycling bags.
Now you may well be wondering about the odd way I've masked it off . . . well truth be told it's another issue . . . the other week, in what I can only assume was a moment of insanity, I covered the inside top & bottom of the case with PaxMate.
That's to say that it's not insane to use PaxMate, just why I did it before I painted the case I'm just not sure. I should and do know better.
So that's why it's an odd masking job, I never intended to paint the inside, just the top, back of the motherboard tray and rear, just don't want paint all over the sound damping foam.

You may of spotted that I've left the side bits/lips/edges (the bits around the edges on the side of the frame where the side panel rests) masked off, yes there is a reason for this and I've not had another bout of insanity.
But I'm just going to leave you guessing

With that done, I was going to start cutting out that hole in the door, for this I plan to use the combo of hand drill and hacksaw blade.
I've used this before back on project spork when cutting up a sheet of acrylic http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i4...erspex_cut.jpg
Basically I mark a line away from the actual cut line, drill a series of holes along the line, then cut through with a hacksaw blade. Take a junior hacksaw blade, tape around a couple of inches of one end and hay presto a simple hand saw.
Then use the flexy shaft and sanding drum on a rotary tool to nibble and sand it down to the shape you want.

Not the quickest way of doing it I'll admit, however I don't have a jigsaw, however it does work and very well. No issues with ripping or cracking the acrylic.

    Now all I need . . . is . . . my . . . drill . . . bits . . . Ahhhhh, ****!
Did a major spring clean of the flat a couple of weeks back and I remember I had them and remember thinking, "I need to put them somewhere safe, I'll need them in a couple of weeks time."
Well where ever I put them, it safe alright, so safe I cannot find them.
So after a couple of hours making a big mess looking for them, then another couple of hours cleaning up again, I'm going to have to go buy some more.
How much do you want to bet I going to find them the day after I no longer need them.

Still one bit of good news orange LEDs and resistors courtesy

    Re: Project - Otherhalf

Today it's been lovely and sunny, no wind, no rain, great weather for air brushing.

    So out comes the elephant.

Yes alright I can already here the giggles from the professional painters, well all I can say is I don't have the spare cash for something good, even low end good, so I have to stick with cheap and basic, heck it serves its purpose of blowing out dust from projectors, being able to borrow it and being able to also function as a very basic air brush is an added bonus of zero cost.
For those interested it originally came off ebay, was £47, that's for compressor + hose + airbrush. For a cheap compressor with 3 litre Receiver is around £90 and a basic gravity feed badger airbrush is another £90 here in the UK

For paint, I'm using artist acrylics, they are not very durable and easy to damage, however they are very easy to handle, have short drying times and again I have them to hand so cost = 0
Also has the advantage over spray cans that I can mix any colour I like.

For surface prep all I did was a good clean off, washing up liquid, water and a clean sponge, patted dry with a clean towel, then a hair drier, finally wiped down with a clean lint free cloth.
That was done yesterday, before masking off, today I just went over with the lint free cloth again to remove any dust that might have got on there over night.
I'm basically going to be relying on spray can clear lacquer to seal it all off at the end, I've done this before and it works quite well.

First off, partly because the air brush and compressor is not really the right tool for painting a whole case and partly due to the nature of the paint, I go lightly over the areas to be painted at around 20cm (9") distance, this forms a sort of tack coat/adhesion layer, this means that later layers cover far better.

Give that a couple of minutes, no more is needed, in fact by the time I've finished going over each side in turn the first is ready for the next layer. (it's very thin layer + artist acrylic dries fast)
This is how it looks after the first serious layer, still rather patchy.

I let that fully dry for a few minutes few Time for a quick break and to fill up on the most important modding supply.

Mmmmm Doughnuts & coffee, please note the very important point here, Custard filled, chocolate filled is also exceptable, not jam filled as it just doesn't contain the creamy goodness that is essential for case modding.

Back to the air bushing, unfortunately some very bad and/or forgotten-to-take photo's means I don't have a full set layer on layer of the same panel, so over to the back of the motherboard tray.

Result after 2 coats (not counting the tack coat)

    Result after 4 coats

One interesting thing here is the camera is showing up patchyness, but to the eye it's now pretty much one smooth flat colour, not that I'm finished at 4 coats.

The sharp-eyed amongst you may have spotted a problem, not with the back of the motherboard tray but with the mask on top.

the one cog tooth which is bent up was me checking on over spray and to find out why it was no longer sticking

The edges of the mask kept lifting, it was fine at first, only by coat 4 did it start to lift.
It took me a while to figure out what the problem was, the Sun, it's only in the late afternoon the Balcony gets full direct sun light, and it was so strong that the case under the paint was getting rather hot, which in turn was causing the double sided tape glue to lose it's stick enough for the card to lift.

So I've called it a day and it was time to cook dinner anyway, I should be able to get another few layers done tomorrow.
The coulor is also coming out a bit darker than I want so I'm going to lighten it a bit, also going to have a play with some ideas.

Sorry chap, missed your post until now.

As far as I can tell it makes negligible difference/improves thermal performance.

The only reason I say that is because of the diminished racket from the rest of the system, I could run the fans at a slightly faster rate, so the temps dropped

    YMMV though,
