    AMD 965 build help

    hi all,
    i building a new rig an need advice from more seasoned builders.so far these are the parts i am considering;
    AMD 965be 3.4ghz,
    asrock 890gx extreme3 mobo,
    ballistix tracer 2x2gb ram @1600mhz,
    tuniq tower120 extreme,
    xclio a380plus(already purchaced)side panel tinted(dark smoke)

    is the mobo an ram any good,i just getting into online gaming an overclocking,heard the asrock was good for that?i know the cooler is good,better than corsair h50 even.

    thanks people.any tips appreciated.

    Re: AMD 965 build help

    Personally my experience with Crucial RAM is that they do their advertised speeds with no problem, but if you try to tighten the timings or overclock the speed it doesn't do much more than the advertised.

    I haven't used an Asrock board so I can't really advise but with a Tuniq Tower you should be able to reach 3.8ghz-4.0ghz. The thing limited Phenom II overclocks tend to be temperature, I could only reach 3.8ghz with my Phenom II 955 with a Noctua NH-U12P and it'd reach about 58 degrees load in winter.

    That cooler is not better than an H50 to my knowledge, nowhere near as good. I think the only air coolers which come close are the prolimatech megahalems and that popular one for £30, the name of which I have forgotten. Uhh... it came in a special Christmas edition....?

    Re: AMD 965 build help

    That's not a very good unit at all, I don't think you'll need a Corsair HX1000W though, something like the corsair HX650W would be enough for that build + future graphics card update, if you probably won't get a graphics card then something like a Corsair CX400W would be enough really.

    Re: AMD 965 build help

    Em what do you need a corsair 1kw PSU for? unless your planning on running the largest overclock in history coupled with 4 5970s or 2 GTX 480s you won't need it.

    As mentioned go with the H50 if you have the dough otherwise as nibbler suggested the megahalems.

    i have a 750w Trendsonic aswell.is that any better?

    Re: AMD 965 build help

    HX650W will be enough for something like a 5870 or 2x 5770 CF and an overclocked Phenom II 965 easily. I'd even bet it'd support a 5970 and an overclocked i7 with no problems.

    Scan sell them under intel CPU coolers with a additional £6 AMD retention kit, both are out of stock though. Got a feeling the other one nibbler was on about is the titan fenrir.

    *edit* Just checked the website that should never be mentioned round here on pain of death and they do have both in stock, just type overclockers in google lol.

    Re: AMD 965 build help

    From a quick search it does seem the NOctua NH-D14 can beat the H50 though:

    http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling...vs-noctua.html

    It is a massive cooler though so make sure you can get it into your case.

    so can the tuniq tower 120 extreme,lol,i know i'm gonna get abuse for that but its thier in black an white.i narrowed it down to 2 now;
    noctua nh-d14 or tuniq tower 120 extreme
    probably going with the tuniq as i am going all out u.v cables,window tint,etc.the noctua is better but not majorly for the price difference,and its so ugly,i was thinking i could paint the fans but would this ruin thier dynamics?
