Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

OK, Ive been thinking about getting more RAM to improve my system, but the prices are a tad daunting right now. Ive also read up about RAM speeds and understand a little more now, so 667MHz is all I need, unless .... I overclock.

What are my prospects with this system :

Gigabyte GA-P35-S3L, Intel E6550 dual core, Corsair XMS2 CM2X1024-5400C4 667MHz 2GB. CPU cooler is an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro, average core temp at full load only rises to 45 deg C.

Clock is 333MHz at the moment.

What else can I do to improve the system if I didnt overclock?
    Cheers, David

Bit of a dilemma there, since if RAM prices are too high that rules out SSD but then you also can't really overclock with that RAM. I don't see how you can improve the system without spending the money for RAM or SSD. SSD would probably help more (unless you already have one...)

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

Another 2GB of ram minimum is what i'd definitely go for! Then again if your specs are correct and you are running XP Home id suggest going Win 7 with new ram. I know i love XP too, even when vista was released it took me 4 years to bite the bullet.

With 4-6GB's of ram, I'd try to get little higher than 6400 so you've got some headroom if you overclock. And a new 64Bit OS you'll see a nice improvement. However with that setup it's begging to be overclocked, i'd expect you'll have quite a bit of headroom on stock volts so whats to lose? And then if you become hooked like i have (trying to get a world record on E6300 Conroe on air lol) the ram will allow you to go that bit further.

    Cheers.

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

That RAM is the equivalent to 800Mhz CL5, not guaranteed that it'll run at that speed but it's "equivalent" to anyway. Overclocking is certainly something I'd try first as socket 775 systems are easy to overclock anyway and you have an aftermarket cooler too. You could simply set the RAM on a lower multiplier too to ensure it doesn't bottleneck the CPU overclock.

Seeing as you're using XP I'd actually go against what others say with getting more than 2GB RAM, 2GB RAM is actually plentiful for XP unless you do photo/video editing etc, stuff that eats up a lot of RAM, in that case adding RAM won't help unless you switch to a 64 bit OS.

I'm not sure what drives those 320GB are but my sibling's pc is using a WD 250GB Caviar, 3800+ at 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM and a 8800GS and it's definitely the HD that bottlenecks it.

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

Yeah, XP rocks my world anyway for now

The laptop in the house has Vista and I really do hate it.... Win7 does seem to be flavour of the month though, so maybe an upgrade there.

I just had a cash windfall (even though some has already been eaten by need for a new bloddy freezer (kitchen type, not cpu )), so maybe that pair of 8500 Corsair Dominator should have my name on it.

Then I need lessons on overclocking, I remember some guy was "god" as far as that was concerned, but it was some years ago. Anyone point me to a good guide for dummies? Im fine with building and repairing, but overclocking is a completely unknown quantity to me !

    Thanks for thoughts so far
    Cheers, David

    This guide looks about right:

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...beginners.html

It certainly doesn't take a god to overclock though. All it takes is time and patience (and perhaps luck for a lucky CPU)

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

Using a divider, overclocking the CPU shouldn't be a problem with that RAM. Pretty sure all P35 boards can do it.

A set of uber enthusiast RAM isn't really worth the money. I've done it before, and regretted it. Currently using XMS2 modules just like you, although I think mine might be the PC6400 stuff, don't remember off the top of my head, never had a problem with overclocking. PC5400CL4 and PC6400CL5 are generally identical modules both capable of doing either speed. If not a 0.1v voltage bump normally fixes that.

Actually had this E4300 at 3.6ghz, double it's original clock-speed with no issues at all with this ram, thanks to dividers. If I took it out and swapped it all for £300 a module stuff right now there'd be no noticeable difference in performance or max CPU overclock.

Your setup, should reach 2.8-3.0ghz quite easily without changing anything but BIOS settings.

I would ask though, what kind of performance you're after? Where does your PC feel slower than you want it? That makes a big difference in where you should spend your money.

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

Well, I know I do need more ram as I am close to maxing out on current apps with stuff like Photoshop CS5 (theres a gig on its own !). I only need 3 or 4 full res images open with half a dozen edit steps in memory and there we go, Im out.

I also edit large music files and videos, so Im currently going for 4gb of min 800MHz. Depends on what ebay is offering as to what I'll end up with.

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

4GB and a reasonable overclock, will be a nice noticeable speed incrase. Remember you'll need a 64bit OS to make the most of it.

Only thing I would say is 800mhz max, not min.

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

    OK, so I now own a pair of 2GB Corsair XMS2 6400's.

Im hoping to ramp up the clock from 333 to 400MHz so will that give me 2.8GHz (at 7x multiplier) and 800MHz on the RAM, assuming I do it right ? Do you think I'll need to increase the voltage on the cpu to achieve this (E6550). The ram says it works at 800MHz at 1.8v, existing level.

Oh and my mobo has 4 ram slots, two are red - 1 & 3, two are yellow - 2 & 4, my current ram is in slots 1 & 2, one red, one yellow. Does the positioning make a difference..... I know its something to do with single channel or dual channel, but I dont know which way round is best.

    me = very slightly nervous.....
    Cheers, David

slot colours the same to make it dual channel and the heatsink needs to be better than the stock one or you should not overclock it.

most cpu's do need extra voltage, theres a few threads about overclocking on here

Sounding good. Ram in same coloured slots, yup.

You'll probably need a slight voltage increase on the CPU, just a case of nursing it up til it's stable and watching the temps. You may need to edge up some other voltages like the northbridge and ram, but I doubt it'll be more than 0.1v

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

OK, the RAM that I bought had one stick DOA, so Im selling the other stick (had refund for the duff one), and now I'm back to square one.

    Few more questions :

Still finding good looking items in ebay - yes I know the risks - and some of them are PC2-8500. Is there any reason I cannot use these ?

Which brands should I avoid ?

    Ta

Re: Overclocking/Something else ? - how much could I get out of this ?

No reason you can't you use PC8500, your board should support them being IP-35, you just wont see any extra bang for your extra buck, but if you can get it cheaply enough, no reason not to I guess.

I'd avoid the no-names on eBay, stick to well known brands. Personally I swear by Corsair and Crucial, but there's a few other rock solid companies out there too.

Kingston, OCZ and Mushkin are fine as well.
