    Watercooling Madness

Alright well my current case is only good for a 240mm rad and i can hardly fit anything in it so I eventually got round to getting a better one, thanks to Brewster0101 I now have an awesome Lian Li case (my first one!). Man does it look good, very pleased with it.

Now since i have a 360mm rad i needed to find room for it, the top panel seemed like a good spot and i know lian li sell their own top for radiators but I couldnt find retailers for it so i decided to put some of my tools to use and do it myself!.

So time to mark up the whole placement of the grill/radiator. Using my awesomely cool Japanese rotating pencil (really is an epic mechanical one haha).

All looks OK so far, already started a bit off with the dremel equivalent from Draper and i cut through most of the corners (i didnt take pictures at this point sorry ) And then used a Jigzaw to cut everything. And the holes were drilled by a 4mm bit(after finding a 2.5 was to small!).

Heres the almost complete top without grill :

Ok so not the best work ever but working with some cutting discs that just either worn from the inside out (ie falling off!) and the others just grinding down so low it meant that i had to use the jigsaw most of the time and avoid using the guiding plate as to not scratch the panel, unfortunately there were a handful of marks now (not bad if you dont look very closely) and then the stupid wooden work bench managed to scratch the side enough to annoy me but to fix that I will be polishing it as they arent deep... i hope that works .

Now for pictures of the finished top:

Looks very acceptable IMO so did what i set out to achieve . Apologies for the poor picture quality, had to use my HD2 as the DSLR is on charge after my dad used it at silverstone last week lol.

Now the more annoying part is to move everything over to this new case! Need to find an anti vibration block for my DDC pump (any suggestions?) and then I think im set. After thats done I will provide some better pictures of the finished pc!.

Oh and thanks to scaryjim with his very similar mod (i was going to do that on my older case but it just to much now haha) It gave me a kick in the right direction .

    Nice

Here's a belated tip (and also to anyone considering doing simular) Masking tape.
Tape off the area you are planning to cut to avoid getting any scratches on the existing paint work, also tape and clamp/vice areas as well.

@nibbler Antec do do a 200mm rad originally designed for the 1200, it may be too large to fit inside the miniP180 although you may be able to mount it on the top of the case.
    http://store.antec.com/Product/cooli...5-75210-7.aspx
Try asking in the Antec section on Hexus about getting hold of one if you want to try.

Old go watercooling old school and moddify a car heater core to fit.

Already had a look at that yeah, apparently its aluminium instead of copper though which is why it's only £50.

    Re: Watercooling Madness

id just take a jigsaw and cut the whole front (internally) then youd have room for a nice radiator! .

Well as promised here are the photos of it finished and compared to my older case haha.

    old:

    New:

Looks similar in height to my old one(it is i guess ) but the extra depth makes it so much better to use and the removable MB tray makes it easier to install (albeit it can be a pain to put back in). Cable management looks like my best work (im crap at routing cables!), dont know how much the side panel can hide so i didnt want to shove every single cable behind it.

Fits my water cooling equipment easily, just need to find a pad for my pump to make the vibration even less. I was expecting it the case to vibrate like mad as people seem to say that about aluminium cases but this is probably quieter than that old chieftec and my cm690 previously so Lian Li cases certainly get a thumbs up from me .

I realised how much fan controllers help with noise but here is where i hit a down side of the case, it looks so nice and sleek that I cant buy any crappy fan controller (my old 6 fan died 2 weeks ago!). Seems the controllers with a similar style cost £30+ which is a bit much for me tbh, i only need a damn fan controller for 4+ dont need thermals etc so any suggestions are hugely appreciated as it sounds like a tornado in my room at the minute .

Overall, very impressed with this case and it appears my handy work looked better after the rad was fitted .

    Re: Watercooling Madness

    If you've got a 5.25" to 3.5" adaptor then the Scythe Kaze http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/...1&cat=0&page=1 4 fan for £11

If it has to be 5.25" then the zlaman ZM-MFC1+ is your best bet at £20
    http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/prod...ZMMFC1PB&af=50

Main word of warning is watch the Watts per channel esp if you've chained fan together.

    Re: Watercooling Madness

Dont think i have an adaptor (will double check). Always seen the zalman pop up just seems expensive for what you get when £8 more gets you a scythe with an LCD display and loads of extras .

I might just get the more expensive one cause i guess I shouldnt need another one... I have 8 Fans so i guess i could just chain 2 to each fan head. My radiator fans are stealthed for 3--> 1 connection do you think they would be alright on one header?.

    Re: Watercooling Madness

simple add up the the ampage listed on the fan and multiply by 12 to get the wattage

If you don't want to twiddle the knobs and just set the speed and leave it then you could mount the fan controller internally.
Personally I don't like that so much, it can look good but the loss of control puts me off.

You could look at the NZXT Sentry 2 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/NZXT-...Controller-525
has 5 channeles at 10watts per channel (0.83*amp) and an automatic speed setting
[i]avarage 120mm fan is around 0.2-0.3 amps so 2 or 3 fans off one channel is doable

Here's the number for auto mode, temps are from the temp probes, so this will mean quite a few extra cables you'll need to route.
    - 40% (< 20°C)
    - 50% (20-24°C)
    - 60% (25-29°C)
    - 70% (30-34°C)
    - 80% (35-39°C)
    - 90% (40-44°C)
    - 100% (> 45°C)

Now the reason I sugest this is that what you can do is mount it backwards in a 5.25" bay if you don't want it to spoil the look of your case and leave it on auto.

This is what I mean about backwards mounting

That's actually a Zalman ZM-MFC1+ which had chrome paint applied to the front and blue annodized knobs

    Re: Watercooling Madness

Ok well the Yate loons use 0.27Amps so 3 of them would only be 9.72W which is more than the zalmans 7W per channel , the scythes are 12w per channel i think so i assume the load isnt to great. The NZXT keeps popping up and I was going to get it but keep thinking about it looking different I.e not brushed aluminium. Need to stealth my DVD drive but i hope to keep everything in the same scheme. The price of the NZXT makes it pretty darn close to the scythe ones which to me seems a bit of a hard reason to choose it since I can just use the scythe and it should fit in fine with the case.

The idea about having it reversed does sound very interesting though but yet to see any "cheap" fan controllers to use anymore. The one I had was only £6 from ebuyer but has been removed, had it for ages though but looked so cheap and nasty. Never knew choosing a fan controller would be so hard!.

    Hicks,
    I run a Zalman ZM-MFC1+ with
    4 x YATE LOON 120mm - D12SL-12 on one channel
    4 x YATE LOON 120mm - D12SL-12 on one channel
    3 x YATE LOON 120mm - D12SL-12 on one channel
    3 x YATE LOON 120mm - D12SL-12 on one channel
2 x 60mm fans on a corsair ram cooler on one channel
    1 x Xigmatek 120mm XLF-F1254 Blackline 1500RPM on one channel

I have run this setup 24/7 for the last 10 months with no problems at all.

Also, a nice looking build. Keep up the good work.

No the case is mine! .

Hmm piggin that sounds like a reliable controller, If i can find it for <£15 ill probably buy it as it still looks nice as its brushed aluminium .

Found out last night that ive put my radiator fans the wrong flipping way, they are intake fans and not exhaust fans at the minute.... fml, will need to somehow get them out later lol.

Looking good with my old baby. You've done what I wanted to originally do with it when I got it, never got round to it of course.

    Re: Watercooling Madness

Haha, it was the reason I got your case.... this one seemed like one of the handful of cases that could accept a 360mm radiator, I didnt want to pay £150 for the corsair 700D even though it would have saved me time and effort on the top, I think im more happy with this one as its lighter haha!.

Now to find a way to fund a new SSD and a handful of other awesome stuff and maybe a new PSU as this one is near EOL i fear... new job needed lol!.

    @Hicks
That's the big issue with cheaper fan controllers, they are not designed to handle the higher loads
You could just plug the fans into the psu with a 5v fan mod
