HP Microserver Dust Filter Mod
I took apart my HP Microserver to upgrade the RAM earlier today and was greeted by this:

Not the worse I've seen but unpleasent.
Looking closely at the front access door it almost seems like it was designed to hold some sort of dust filter!

Separating the plastic face with the metal chassis was easy, just a few clips, a nut and screw for the lock. For the filter I used a bit of window insect netting I had lying around, a single layer isn’t quite fine enough to catch a good amount dust but two layers should do the trick.

Sticking the door back together was as simple as pulling it apart;

Here it is in action, can barely see it;

Although dust is still going to make its way in to the machine (the machine is on the floor afterall), hopefully I wouldn’t need to use half a can of gas duster next time I upgrade.
Re: HP Microserver Dust Filter Mod
Any idea if it has had much impact on temps?
My micro server should arrive tomorrow :D
Re: HP Microserver Dust Filter Mod
Just took these:
Idle:
34°C With filter
33°C Door open
Load:
49°C With filter
45°C Door open
I neglected to take temps before the mod and can’t be bothered to take the filters off - but you can imagine the temps would be somewhere between ‘with filter’ and ‘door open’.

Update!
Opened up the Microserver today to upgrade the hard drives and noticed a far less dust inside the machine compared to the last upgrade event 3 months ago. There are a few spots of dust because I didn't cut the filter to the right size but other than that; the filter seems to be a success :)

EDIT: In case anyone had noticed, those wedges of paper under the drive bays keep them from viabrating and rattling.
Re: HP Microserver Dust Filter Mod
Iv still not done anything with my microserver... stupid really a spent so much on it and 2 x 2T drives for it and its just gathering dust.

Can I potentially interest you in *this*? I'll be buying a new one in the morning, but if you're considering shifting it on then drop me a line sharpish.
Re: HP Microserver Dust Filter Mod
na im deffo gunna use it buddy but thanks anyway :)
Re: HP Microserver Dust Filter Mod
DDY a suggestion for you, Lift the server up slightly.
A chunk of wood the same size as the server footprint, drill a hole in each corner, then fit 4 large rubber door stops (screw in type)
eg http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/3974724/
I find lifting the pc off the floor by a couple of inches does help in reducing the amount of dust build up, also means you can vacuum under it ;)
