    I want a new case

    Hi
This is my first thread on the forum so hello first

I am in the market for a new case I recently bought a Asus gtx 580 Direct cuii so feel like i should get some better airflow as well as something a bit prettier. I have mainly been looking at the NZXT Phantom and was wondering if anyone has opinions on this case.

Things I'm worried about include the low compatibility with other fans and the ability to bring air in from the front, the fans placement there makes them seem like they would battle with each other.

    Hi Newt,

Presumably you have seen some reviews of this case, although it looks like something out of Doctor Who imho, the 3d Guru chap seems to like it:
    http://www.guru3d.com/article/nzxt-phantom-review/1

Not quite sure what you mean by compatibility wrt fans but basically you will either end up with a positve pressure system (a bit more air in than out) or a negative pressure system (more air out than in).

There are benefits for both systems - positive pressure is generally considered good for reducing the build up of dust inside the case and provides a bit of internal turbulence so that you don't get dead spots (regions of little or no flow) which may warm up. Some folks also say that it can reduce overall system temps i.e. not only those components which have temperature monitors (CPU,gfx) but also memory, hdds etc.

Negative pressure generally increases air flow through the case, promoting cooling for those components directly in the flow (some say is also a bit quieter) so you may get cooler CPU readings. On the down side the case will drawn in air from all the cracks in the case including optical drives etc. so that unfiltered air enters the case and you get more dust which can (eventually) have a heating effect.

A couple of rules which may be obvious
    - usually people have intakes at the front and exhaust out of the top and back (that where the hot air goes)
    - bigger slower fans can shift more air with less noise than smaller faster fans

The case that you mentioned seems to have lots of fan controllers so you could adjust the cfm between front and top/back and monitor the temps to find the set up that suits you best.

That's a lot of useful information thank you
I've looked into the case and it seems it has unusual mountings for the 200mm fans so only NZXT fans will work with them.
I'll read up on how people organise their fans inside of it

I might be biased but I love my RV01, its a revolution in air cooling...

Yes and a bit out of touch, the RV01 was a great concept but flawed and it's cooling was rather lackluster for what it was, The RV02 improved on it and the RV02E and RV03 really have taken it another step on and they are some of the best air cooled cases, although lacking for watercooling use.

The Phantom is good, it has a slightly odd cooling layout, based around a side to side cross flow at the front over the hard drives, the motherboard area is in from the side and top-front and out through the back and top-rear.
However that's only at stock fan setup, the beauty of it is that you can set up the cooling in quite a few different layouts depending how you want it and what works best for you.

If you love the look of the phantom then go with it you'll not be disappointed.
I'll throw a few other decent case ideas at you

Coolermaster Storm Enforcer http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coole...usb-30-w-o-psu Add a 200mm Fan to the top for a bit of added cooling, the BitFenix fans are very good for the cost http://www.scan.co.uk/products/200mm...8fdb%29-700rpm (yes it's the blue one but they do come in other colours and plane black)
Coolermaster HAF 912+ http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coole...r-case-w-o-psu same case inside but HAF styling and the right side panel is just flat. (again add a 200mm fan to the top)
LanCool K60 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lian-...g-case-w-o-psu no additional fans needed
BitFenix Survivor http://www.scan.co.uk/products/bitfe...handle-w-o-psu add one 120mm rear fan
Fractal Design Arc http://www.scan.co.uk/products/fract...e-case-w-o-psu ideally add two additional 140mm fans (2front, 2 top, 1 rear)
