Fractal Design Core 3000 v Coolermaster Silencio RC-550

    Case advice please

Was set on getting the Core 3000 but Scan have Today Only offer on the Silencio at £54.

My current computer is quiet (Coolermaster Elite 340 is the case) but not silent.

I have limited height (around 430mm) in the desk hence the short list of cases.

    Anyone have the Silencio?

(I did post a thread about the Core 3000 and no replies so I can only assume no one has purchased it)

    Other comments?

Re: Fractal Design Core 3000 v Coolermaster Silencio RC-550

The Core 3000 is nothing massively special or out standing, it's a decent mid tower but not much more than that.
About to only real thing of special note is the nice hard drive trays that fractal design uses which are better for anti-vibration than the rail system used in the Silencio (and most lower cost mid towers)
Overall solid but nothing to make it really stand out and I'm not impressed at them for the price.
If they were £35-40 it would be more tempting

The Silencio is going to be less noisy, a lack of vents + door + sound absorbing foam is going to make it less prone to sound leaks, however at the same time it does greatly curtail cooling, so what hardware and what you use it for is going to have an impact.

What are you planning to load into it? and use it for?

PS though about modding the 340? you should be able to make that thing quiet

Re: Fractal Design Core 3000 v Coolermaster Silencio RC-550

I'm happy with the noise of the 340 - rear grill removed, side panel vents taped up and HD is fitted in a HD cage from another case and rests on foam in the middle of the case so space is very tight.

My days of trying to make computers silent are over (thank God)

Spec is AMD x3 8450 with Core Contact Freezer, 1TB Samsung F1, Asus mobo - onboard graphics used, DVD RW and Antec HE 80mm fan PSU.

Uses - surfing and office work. No games or anything else that taxes the computer.

Reason for wanting to swap - lack of internal space in the case, can't test hard drives without removing existing cage, I have several hard drives I need to test and would like to try other OS such as Linux/Windows 8 so would like easy access to the hard drives.

Also, would like to try out positive airflow for dust reasons.

Well if you're willing to spen the money the fractal design mini define

Also have you considered a 5.25" hot swap bay? http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...-35-sata-black
The 340 is fairly pressure netural, depending on the fans used.

Did consider the Define Mini but it's MATX again and I don't want to spend that much money

My expensive case purchases include Superflower Aluminium case - £125 which I had to dump in the tip, Antec P180 around £70 when it first came out - ready for the tip as I modded it. After these two, I don't want to spend over £50 on a case, would much rather spend £30-40 max but...

I bought the Antec hot swap for my brother and he finds it very useful but I'd rather have internal mounted HD, actually the Coolermaster has a hot swap built in

Re: Fractal Design Core 3000 v Coolermaster Silencio RC-550

Well for what you're going to put in it and your planned usage I'd say the Coolermaster Silencio RC-550 is probably a very good option.
The cooling isn't the best but you don't need much for what you have. The lack of vents, door and sound damping foam will help keep the noise to a minimum.
The hot swap should be very useful for trying out different OS's and testing/accessing various hard drives quickly.

Ebuyer has some budget Casecom computer cases, that at under £30 each are pretty good value for money - just don't expect too much.

Most come with 2 large fans and have space for loads more. Unlike they Fractal there are no drive trays, but since the hdd bays are pointing sideways drives are still relatively easy to install/remove.

    Casecom K5-7688
    Casecom KM-6988
    Casecom KM-9188

Personally I would buy the Fractal case, at < £52 delivered with 3 large fans and a fan controller it is a good value for money. I do rather like the drive trays, reminds me of my old Antec P160.

Silencio on Special again at Scan - tempted but only reason I don't want a 'silent' case is, I help relatives and friends out with their computers and sometimes the computers are quite noisy. If I have a silent computer of my own, I will notice the noise more from their computers .

Having said that the second base unit I use (Antec P150) sits about a metre away and that's quiet.

It does have good features but I'm still not sure.

Do really like the Core 3000 .

I think the deciding factor may be height as the Silencio might fit without issue whereas the Core 3000 may mean desk modification

I did look at the Casecom cases as I think Pob recommends them but I'd like 2 front fans (positive pressure).

P160 - I remember the review and aluminium from fighter jets... silent as a mouse - a dead one..

Stick the 2nd fan onto the side-panel directly above your GPU, probably more effective that way anyway.

The P160 was the best case I have ever owned, but then it has to be at ~ £140.

I'm glad you're most expensive case was more than the one I bought - Superflower Aluminium with 6 x 80mm fans at £125!

And that was the cheaper one, at the time I was also considering a Lian Li V1000 for ~ £190 - if I remember that right.
