    Decent case for around £50-£60?

    Hi guys,

Just upgraded to an Asus P8Z68-V with a i5-2500K and Gelid Tranquillo cooler - this only just about fits in my Thermaltake Xaser III ally case (8 years old!) so I have decided maybe it is time to get a more modern case. I need minimum of 120mm fans front and rear, 4x 5.25" bays externally accessible and as many 3.5" internal as I can. I have one SSD so a suitable bay would be useful, and bottom-mounted PSU would be good. It also has to be wide enough to accommodate the Tranquillo which is huge...

Any ideas? Would prefer to use Scan as I get free delivery from them

That's a nice looking case, but it only has 3x 5.25" external bays Need two of them for my flashy Aerocool LCD fan controller

Re: Decent case for around £50-£60?

I've been looking at the Coolermaster cases, I quite like the look of the HAF-912, but I understand it's quite noisy due to its mesh construction - anyone able to confirm this or is it just a rumour? Think the CM690 looks a bit plain, but will have a look at the others listed.

Re: Decent case for around £50-£60?

Going slightly out of my budget, the HAF 922 looks nice - anyone got any experience with them? The 5x 5.25" bays looks nice as my Aerocool fan controller takes up 2 and I have 2 external drives to install. Does this case have an SSD bay?

Re: Decent case for around £50-£60?

Have a look at the Coolermaster Stock enforce it's the same frame as the HAF 912 but a different front bezel and side panels (and a bit more expensive)
The HAF 912+ isn't that noisy (although that is more down to the fans you put in it) it only comes with a very quiet 200mm front fan and 120mm rear fan.
Yes a mesh construction case or one with lots of vent to let air in/out will also let sound out, it's almost impossible to allow air in but keep sound out.
eg the fractal design define cases, they come with screwed on blanking plate on the fan vents with them on it does a far better job at keeping noise in but it also reduces the air flow, removing the blanking plates will give you better air flow but will also let more noise out.

It's all a balancing act of sound vs air flow vs cost

One thing I will say is the fans used have a major effect on the noise and air flow, stick to 1000rpm 120mm fans and you'll have a very quiet case, go with 1600rpm or more and it'll be far noisier but you'll have more air flow.

The HAF 922 is slightly bigger and it's a decent case, however dust is a major issue as only the front has a filter, now while the 912 has a far smaller side panel vent no 2nd bottom vent and the psu vent is filtered so there's less areas for dust to get in.
The 140mm side panel vent is fairly easy to get a filter for and the front bezel is far easier to remove to get to the front filter to clean it. (that's one major issue for me to the HAF series you have to remove the front bezel to get to the fan filter to clean it.

Coolermaster CM 690 II Lite is probably the best one, 4, 5.25" drive bays, loads of 3.5 inch bays,
bottom mounted psu, lots of space and cable tidying holes, and i'm sure it also mounts 2.5inch drives too

at the price bracket your looking i would recomend the Enermax Volcanus. it looks epic for the price. and some of the features are better than most in that price range.

Sorry but for the cost it's not that special, £30-40 it would be a better option

The new Lancool K59 first knight looks decent http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lian-...e-usb3-w-o-psu Although I prefer the look of the k60
Actaully looks like it's the same frame as the K60, but the 5.25" bay reduced to add a 2nd hard drive cage, a new front bezel (top bezel looks the same) however it doesn't include top fans of the gromited screws needed to fit them (can be bought separately but that added cost the K60 doesn't have) http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1206-page8.html
EDIT: there's also the K58 which is the same as the K60 but also without the top fans.

If you can push you budget slightly to £71 then the Fractal design ARC is also a lovely case http://www.scan.co.uk/products/fract...e-case-w-o-psu

Nice, but not enough 5.25" bays

It's looking like a HAF 922 for me....

Strictly speaking it's LanCool, which is a subdivision of Lian-Li
The K60 is better, same case, but with a full set of fans fitted.
You can add top fans to the k58 but you also need to get hold of the special rubber grommited fan screws, so you're better off just getting the K60 to start with.

The Xigmatek Midgard is in the Bestbuy closing down sale, with the code BBY applied it comes to £48.98 delivered. Not quite such a steal as the white version was on Ebuyer a month or 2 back, but still a nice case and in budget. I have no idea whether a tranquilo will fit, but a 212+ fits with ease.

Re: Decent case for around £50-£60?

The Antec 100 is £40 and is just the antec 200 with a different front bezel and black interior.
Both of which are little more than a slight tweeking of the 300, slightly thinner steel with pressed areas to add back strength.

It's not bad case, nothing amazingly special, overall a nice revision of the 300, however the 300 is only £2 more and the front fan mounting system in the original 300 is better.
