    Extending PSU Molex cables...

I have a waterchill setup, and plan to have the radiator/pump/res in a seperate pc case.

the problem is that i need 1x 4-pin molex power supply in the radiator case without having an extra power supply. in other words i need to cut and extend a molex connector.

is it safe to do this? what sort of cable will i need? i have loads of spare PSUs so should i rip out all the wires to make this extention?

You will need 1 female molex + pins and 1 male molex + pins. Then simply connect them together making sure you get the pinout right. If you want it to look uber professional, use some thick 4-core cable, or slip some braid over the wires.

perfectly safe, just get some decent electrical cabeling from Maplins (or wherever) then you can get to work extending your cables...

Just remember, do it properly! If u don't think u could do it safely and well, get someone else with a bit more experience to do it for u, Power Supplies are theoretically very dangerous and we don't want you to come crying to us when u've melted your finger off by following our advice to proceed with it

This said, it's actually very safe to do as long as u let the PSU discharge fully before messing with it and making sure that it's unplugged from the mains at all points (obviously!)

hehe, i think i have a bit of experience in cutting wire and using insulating tape.

i am a BSc Physics Student and my professor taught me not to put my fingers in the mains socket

only thing is i am not sure what type of wiring (material) is required, most PSUs i have seen uses copper (well copper in colour)

easier to use one length of wire rather the hodge podge of bits and you may get some voltage drop if cable isn't right sort - I have been known to make them up or sell all the bits ya need very cheap (for a Scotsman

I learned the hard way not to put a screwdriver in a mains socket.. but yeah.. you'll be fine, chap.

I once used a spoon to remove a wall light from its socket, i only hit the earth but I was flung across the room!

Not a nice experience, it shouldnt have had any charge, but it did!

Nice tip here: dont play with fire, and not expect to get burnt. or, Dont play with electrics and expect to get electricuted.
