    Kez's new project

I'm turning an old laptop into an SFF rig.

Basicly, all that will be left of the original lappy will be the resprayed case.

Now, the lappy has with it a 18V 1.1A DC power supply. Are there any DC/DC converters out there that'd let me power an epia off it?

Also, where's a good place to get a laptop CD Drive that's easy to rig up?

    Cheers,
    Kez.

Laptop drives are fairly standard nowadays with the 50pin connectors - you can find convertors to standard 40pin IDE here:

    http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=5

    amongst other places.

Haven't seen any 18V capable power supplies out there tbh - plenty of 12V though - which you could power with a external transformer to keep the amount of circuitry in the box to a minimum, like these:

    Hope this helps!
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

Sounds good. You'll have to post us some piccys when you finish in the SFF Forum!
If you can't find a transformer or you can't fit one, you could always buy one of those small powerboards. They are usually about 12v, go from 60w to around 120w I think.
    Keep us updated mate

Thanks for the response guys. Basically I was looking to cut costs by using a DC/DC converter that could take the 18V provided by the laptop PSU. I think I've found one.

I think I might hang on for nano-itx though, as that'll cut down on the modding I have to do. Hell, I'm not even sure I can be bothered any more... it's a bit of a job!
