    Heatguns for heatshrinking

Can people share or suggest what type of Heatgun you use for Heat Shrinking.

I been looking at them Heat-it-up guns like shown here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Heat-It-Up-Tool/dp/B0025TJVI6

Find lots of them on eBay, do you think they are ok?

Not got any experience of them ones, I use a normal Heatgun for heat shrink myself. You need alot of heat for it to shrink, Far more than a hair dryer can provide.

I got one like this: http://www.thatcable.com/product/Min...-Torch-Hot-Air

But off ebay for quitea bit less, cant seem to find one now though. Certainly does the job well without damaging the cable

I have a hot air paint stripper that works perfectly well. The only different is the size of the end being larger, its never been a problem for me.

Actually before I used the paint stripper, I used the side of the rod of a soldering iron, which worked fine just did not look that even.

Ditto, but my paint-stripper has several nozzles, including a flat-but wide one, and a round but small one. Works a treat.

    Re: Heatguns for heatshrinking

I've mainly used a lighter, it doesn't always work that neatly, although a lot is down to getting the correct sized heat shrink and not overheating one side.

If you use a heat gun, then it generally best to clamp/mount it in a position pointing up, this leaves your hands free to "twiddle" the thing being shrunk in the hot air flow.

    Re: Heatguns for heatshrinking

Does a proper paint stripper or standard heat gun really work? I thought they might be too powerfully that could could damage it, burn you or something else.

Pob255m, that's a good suggestion, I was worried how I was going to manage to turn it without burning my hands off.

So, what wattage do you need to shrink the plastic than?

I'm also looking at this as well, seems to have two heat settings, but I seen some with four heat settings, how much heat do you need? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOT-AIR-HE...item20c017ef50 and http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOT-AIR-HE...item1e67de1a02

Both seem to be the same but different colours. o.O

    Re: Heatguns for heatshrinking

The first one has nozzles so that would be my pick.
Although generally I just use a lighter, normally I use my novelty hand grenade lighter, it was a promotional freebee from NovaLogic for the game Armored Fist 3

It's one of the type of lighter that uses a catalyst coil so the flame burns blue (hotter)

If you keep the heat too long or in one place you can damage both the insulation and heat shrink.
Or any other plastic thing in the path of the heat.

Remember it's easy to vary the heat level simply by the distance you hold the the thing your heat shrinking from the end of the heat gun and how long you keep it in the heat.

Most heat shrink starts to shrink at around 110-125c

Also be aware on the ratio, 3:1 or 4:1 is generally best, depends on what you're heat shrinking.

    Re: Heatguns for heatshrinking

4:1 is quite hard to find. I have got some 3:1 stuff from Conrad It took a while to arrive, but it seems like pretty good stuff.
I have used this guys ebay shop aswell. http://www.heatshrink-online.co.uk/ Heatshirink wasnt as good but the service was really good!

I see there has been no mention of my lighter heatgun... its seriously worth considering, works really well!

Yes it seem interesting, but I cannot help wondering how much better is it than just using a lighter?

    And at £20?

    Re: Heatguns for heatshrinking

Hmmm i should maybe do a comparison video or something.

The main difference would be that instead of the actual flame touching the heatshrink, and risking perishing of the plastic, it is just a blast of heat.

I payed £15 delivered for mine a while ago

I have a gas soldering iron, one of the adapters that came with it is a heat nozel, woks very well on heatshrink. Maplins often have the gas soldering irons on offer.
