Budget case + Good airflow + Could fit 11" GPU

I have my eyes on these three budget cases, but I am not sure if it will fit long graphics cards. My current is a XFX HD 4870, so about 9.5"? but I may be upgrading to longer cards in the future, already have eyes set on a HD 5850/5870, and I know these are long cards.

The three cases below are what I have been looking at, don't judge! jk

    Casecom K5-5288
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Casecom-52...ht_1572wt_1110 (unfortunately ebuyer doesn't sell this one, so going on eBay).

K5-7688 (What I am looking at, really good airflow)
    http://www.ebuyer.com/251582-casecom...nt-fan-k5-7688

    K5-5788
    http://www.ebuyer.com/239059-casecom...-120mm-km-5788

Thanks for opinions. The 5788 and 5288 I can get for £25 on eBay. The K5-7688 will come to about £29 on eBuyer

It has to at least fit a HD 5850 though, just for future proof of graphics cards.

I know £29 is not a lot, but I want a budget case. My current (Coolermaster iTower 930) can barely fit a HD 4870, my 6-pin molex are bent because its so tight. Also the thing is too thick and big, I need something more manageable with cables, bit smaller so its more compact. The top mounted fans are a must, and bottom mounted PSU is a must too. Feels better for airflow and I don't like my heavy Corsair sitting on a thin piece of metal at the top with a few screws

Bit ugly and chunky looking for my likings.

I have decided to go for this one http://www.scan.co.uk/products/cit-j...-panel-w-o-psu

I know its CIT and cheap, but I noticed something I didn't notice before...
If you look on the angled image, you can see there's no bar for HDD case, meaning if you use a mATX (I do!) it could actually fit any card. Think its good for its price?

Its quite nice looking, has space for 1x 120mm rear, 1x 120mm front, 1x 120mm bottom, 2x 120mm side, 2x 120mm top, and I can tape another 120mm to the front.

I didn't notice the bar not being there on the third image.

Looks like it should do nicely(hopefully) and free postage too!!

BTW,HD6850 1GB cards are dipping down to around £90 on and off. Scan had an Asus HD6850 1GB for around £88 recently IIRC.

    Yeah it should do

And yeah I did notice couple of hours ago, definitely going down in price. £88 is cheap considering it was £110. It's £99 at the moment on Scan. I'll wait some more in case it drops a bit more

Re: Budget case + Good airflow + Could fit 11" GPU

Umm I'm not sure if that case will take an 11" card, it looks like a copy of the casecom KM with a few minor tweeks
The max card length for the KM series is 10.5"
Although I see what you mean about there being no separation between the 5.25" and 3.5" external bay Which means it's probably possible to put a longer card in there, although I'll warn you it'll require some careful giggling and manoeuvring to get it in there.
Also don't forget the power cables, most long cards have the pci-e power sockets on the side not the end, which could well prove impossible to plug in or fit within the confines of the bay.
edit: double checking my KM 6788, in fact I think you may find it's impossible because of the power cables, the KM cannot because of the 3.5" bay, the CiT looks like it's 5.25" width all the way down but it looks like that it is still not enough room for the connectors and the wires sticking out. You need about 1.5" for the connector & cables

Of the 3 original cases you linked both the Casecom 5288 and 5788 are not the k5 series but are the KM series

The K5 series can take very long card due to the removable hard drive cage but only in a lower motherboard slot not the upper most slot (which again is limited to 10.5")

The cheapest K5 is the 7688 http://www.ebuyer.com/251582-casecom...nt-fan-k5-7688 which only comes with one fan in the front and I do believe it also lacks a bottom filter which I think the K5-9388 has.

The K5 chassis is also wider than the KM chassis for better cable management.

For an 11" card I'd say that the bitfenix CAT linked to is probably your best bet, not only is the case longer with extra space between motherboard and bays but it's also using a flush rear IO+card slots.
Normally I don't like that in a case as it does tend to make the rear panel weaker and more flexible, but I do concede that it also moves the motherboard back about 10mm to give graphics cards that little extra space.

EDIT: the 6850 is a great card if you're on a budget and is between 8.5" and 9.5" long, ATX motherboard is 9.6" long so any case that will fit an ATX motherboard should fit a 6850, the price vs performance ratio is great and it's not a slow card

Re: Budget case + Good airflow + Could fit 11" GPU

Oh yeah didn't think how difficult it would be to get a card in the 5.25" space. Although I thought most cards have their power connectors at the rear? From some pictures of the HD 6850 stock, its at the rear? The cards I am looking at are HD 5850, HD 5870, HD 6850, HD 7770 if I can get them cheaper. I thought the power was at the rear. If it is on the side, I am stuffed it'll never fit without snapping the PCB.

Yeah I realised it was the KM series, from the case structure I am bit iffy on it, it only has 1 top fan mount.
So either the K5 series, CiT Jupiter or what CAT posted.

The Bitfenix Merc Alpha is a good case, but its a bit chunky and ugly looking, with draws for the DVD drive. I can get the CiT juipter for £25 on Amazon, but that Bitfenix is £31.28, yes I am tight with money just I am not fussed on the case.

I was looking at the K5-7688 because it is stylish and has good airflow that can hold a large card. But then the dimensions of the CiT case is long anyway?

Just my current case reminds me of a fridge, its horrible

the stock 6850 does, however not all will, eg the msi cyclone 6850 has the power connector on the side

But they all use pcb's shorter than 11"

There's not many 11" cards about, the new 7970 and the older 5870 are the only single gpu cards I can think of that are 11" long.

Re: Budget case + Good airflow + Could fit 11" GPU

To be honest I am more looking at the K5 or CiT. Yeah it may be cheaper and harder to put a card in, but it'll do the same thing more expensive cases will do. Plus I am going for the case looks too.

I have filters, but I never know the answer to this question, is it best to put the power supply fan facing up or down? I would be installing a bottom fan.

Re: Budget case + Good airflow + Could fit 11" GPU

Ahh but do you have filters that will fit?
Esp in the bottom where the vents are not standard fan sizes.
Still it's easy enough to make a filter http://forums.hexus.net/chassis-mods...r-pob-way.html

As to which way up the psu should go, it's sort of ether, however for me the benefits of mounting if fan down outweigh fan up.
1- it's taking cool air in from outside the case
2- more cable length, fan up puts the cables on the left side of the psu, if you want to run them behind the motherboard tray then they need to go an extra 3-4 inches to reach.
3- under glow, if you've got a psu with an led fan (granted there are not may decent psu's with led fans) then you get an under glow effect.
4- less dust, this is a bit dependent, if there's no filter then it's going to suck up dust and with the psu up the other way and a well filtered case it shouldn't be an issue, but with the psu facing down you'll not get dust falling in to settle.

The main advantages to fan facing up are
1- extra air extraction, the psu become part of the extraction fans
2- more air with a positive pressure air flow, this is a bit of a double edged sword because the air inside the case will often be warmer than outside
3- Up lighting, if you've got a windowed case and a psu with an led fan then it's going to be lighting up the motherboard from below.

If you get a K5 then you'll want to get 2x140mm filters for the side panel and probably have to make a filter for the bottom. (the older KM series the side panel vent is slightly wider than 140mm so two standard 140mm filters will not fully cover it)
Top and rear being extraction fans don't generally need filters
(note the side panel vents have holes for both 120mm and 140mm fans)

If you're willing to spend a bit more I'd look at the BitFenix survivor CORE http://www.scan.co.uk/products/bitfe...arty-favourite!
Lovely looking case, this cheap one only comes with a single 200mm fan, and no added extras like the gpu support bracket and cable lock.
The advantages of it are a removable hard drive cage, so very long cards could be fitted (15" I think) extra width the main frame is 215mm (it's not the full 230mm as the bezels stick out) that extra width make a heck of a difference when it comes for cable management, there's more space behind the motherboard tray to hide the fat psu cables and more space to stuff in all the sata and power cables for the hard drives.
Also it's generally a bit higher quality, slightly thicker steel + the surrounding plastic bezels make it more rugged.
Also note that the bezel is actually covered in a rubberised coating, doesn't show well in photos but does look nice in the flesh

The width of the KM-6788 is the biggest flaw of it, getting the psu cables behind the motherboard tray was a tight fit, I've got 4 hard drives in mine currently and getting the right hand side panel back on with all those cables is a real tough job, I have to lay the case down on it's left side to get the right panel back on.
The K5 improved this with an extra 10mm width (5mm extra behind the motherboard tray) but it still lacks a 4/8pin cutout in the top corner of the motherboard tray (most people seem to run the cable through the cpu back plate cutout, just remember to run the cable through before you fit the motherboard.
But it's still the biggest flaw of the KM which is why I'd advise the K5 over it, I still think the K5 is the best sub £30 mid tower ATX case out atm.
