    New Case....any ideas?

    Hello all,

    First post so go easy

Going to be slowly upgrading my old Q6600 rig (which is sat in a Thermaltake Xaser III case)

While i'm plotting and planning my upgrade i'm hung up on 4 cases at the moment and would like peoples opinions.

    Haf X
    DF-85
    Dragon Rider
    Overseer RX-1

I can see pro's and cons for all as i'm quite an objective person (and tight fisted so spending money always follows a lot of deliberation )

The plan is it will be housing a Z77 mainboard (still not decided on that either yet), I5-3570K, H100, Vertex 3, Lepa B850W, and then the usual bits n bobs at a later date.

My last PC was just a retail one that i tinkered with, not built from scratch for a few years so would like opinions from you guys please

    Cheers

    Gid

    Re: New Case....any ideas?

For some reason ebuyers forums having a spat at me telling me i'm spamming when i tried to register to see the images lol

Is it a full tower? I thought casecom tended to stick to the mid tower range.

The Haf-X comments perked my interest but couldn't see the pictures unfortunately grrrr

What sort of case do you like ? Quiet ? Cool ? Darth Vader's twin ?
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    Cool/Darth Vaders twin

Quiet doesn't really bother me, so many years in server rooms and having small children, quiet is a luxury i'm used to living without

Oh and do any of them actually have proper USB front headers? was really disappointed seeing all these USB 3.0 pass throughs to the rear I/O's

The best full tower case on the market at the moment (within a reasonable price range) is the NZXT Switch 810. I'm actually just about to buy one!

    Re: New Case....any ideas?

The HAF X v2 is a lovely case and has excellent stock airflow. Haven't seen a switch 810 in the flesh but the reviews are pretty positive. Have done builds in a Corsair 400r and a 550d recently though I would recommend considering some of their newer range. The 500r with an H100 would be pretty awesome although so would the 550d. It's now my main rig case and easily the most pain free and enjoyable build I've ever done. Almost silent and the temps are okay with 2x120 intake and 1x120 exhaust. I'm used to running massive air cooling in rigs so this is a big change and I'm actually very happy with it. Doesn't look much like Darth Vader though.

    Re: New Case....any ideas?

I can't believe you have listed four cases and I didn't like any. I think I would opt for a Corsair Obsidian either the 650 or the 800 or maybe one of the newer Corsair C70 cases in Arctic White.

    Re: New Case....any ideas?

Just finished a build with the Haf X V2 and its a pleasure to work with, airflow is good, build quality is excellent, hot swappable bay, USB 3 front headers, only problem i found is the back cut out for the CPU doesn't line up with my ASUS Z77 Pro other then that a excellent case, its worth noting the loudest piece of the build is the GPU everything else is near silent.

    Re: New Case....any ideas?

I think the 550d is really nice, based off the carbide internal frame but it's got a lot of nice little features that make it so nice.
I was never a fan of the 650D, because being based off the graphite frame it's designed around 200mm fans, which while nice for air cooling are not much use for water cooling which is what the obsidian series has mainly been based around.
the obsidian 800 is a great case for water cooling but the size does really move it up a category.
The Haf X again is also a larger case which puts it into the same larger case category, however again being built around 200-230mm fans it's not ideally suited for water cooling.

I'd say the raven 04 is worth a look too http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...window-w-o-psu again larger and not really designed around water cooling, but still a very nice case. and more of a darthvader look.

    *FIXED

I have this case, I think it's a great case, but it's not been the easiest of cases that I have built with, you have to make sure you get the right PSU as it won't fit anything with more than 180mm depth and because of the position of the PSU you might find that the heat from the side of the case when under load is uncomfortable. I used to keep mine on my desk and when gaming I would get hot air blowing over my mouse. Despite this, I think it is the best case I've had, I love the stack effect cooling idea, I tested this using a Corsair A70 with no fans and with the lower case fans disconnected where even under load the CPU was cooler than it was with the stock HSF using its fan fitted (I can't remember actual temps though. Here's a video on Stack effect cooling.

+1 to HAF X V2, it might not look pretty or flash, but it sure will cool your stuff to the max. Only problem is you can only fit coolermaster's Own megaflow fans if any go. The antec's Big boy 200mm is a much superior fan but you need to do some modding to fit it, especially to the top two slots. It also has dust filters included.

But I would advise to use aftermarket dust filters such as Demciflex which are a south African company but the prices are reasonable. It's around £50 for a set for the HAF X.

There is plenty of space to work with inside and the air flow is great and the case is silent even with all fans on Max.
