Using a ducted case fan to cool the CPU.

I noticed the new Coolermaster ITX sized case the other day, and now Anandtech have done a review on it.

Well I think that's quite pretty, but the lack of height for CPU cooler does worry me a bit. What I am wondering is, has anyone tried a build like this but use a heatsink with the fan removed on the CPU so it fills the space between it and the PSU above it, and wire the 120mm front fan to the CPU fan header.

Might need some baffles to force air through the CPU heatsink fins, and would probably want the PSU mounted so the PSU fan is at the top of the case giving a wall above the CPU heatsink so the front fan doesn't just exhaust out of the PSU.

    Think it might work?

Would need to cool a 100W LLano on a Gigabyte mobo.

This is exactly what I'm toying with atm

    I've got a Zotac 9300 motherboard, a c2d e7600 I think, and 2gb ddr2

I'm considering the ekite 120 & a huntkey 300w 80plus-gold psu But I'm not sure what to do about cooling.
there's a 3dgamerman video "review" of the elite 120 on youtube btw. His reviews are not that good but he does mention there's about 65mm cooler clearance

I think I might try to hold off on the cooler, I'm thinking get the case first then see what the situation is like for the cooler.
Also look at that 80mm because they then to be a bit noisy.

Just watching the newegg.tv Product look at the elite 120
Interesting thing to note that I think was missed by both the aandatech and 3dgamerman reviews, you can mount a 120mm fan on the inside side of the hard drive cage

This is going to give you some more air flow over the motherboard.

Re: Using a ducted case fan to cool the CPU.

Hmm, now that sounds interesting, wonder if there is space for a radiator too

Coolermaster do have a suitable low profile heatsink. Can't say I'm too impressed with the AMD stock one, black edition stuff usually has OK heatsinks but this looks like a 65W cpu job.

Having built the motherboard up into an old ATX case, I now realise my daughter's monitor is VGA only so can't be driven by the digital only motherboard. Result is she will still need the old 8800GT card in there. She doesn't need the small increase in performance over the built in CPU graphics, but she gets a 2 slot wide card and about 60W of idle power consumption, sigh. Will need a new monitor to get around that, which kind of shoots the build price up. Maybe next month.
