modding my thinkpad to have the "apple" style light up logo

    Hi all,

I'm toying with the idea of putting a light up "apple" style logo (but not an apple) on the lid of my thinkpad. Looking at the apple laptops the glow is actually provided by the monitor and a shape is simpley cut out of the lid and covered with a slightly tinted perspex.

    Has anyone done this ?

Anyone interested in trying this with me ?

You might have a problem with that. Lcds normally have a back panel which is non see through. The light in the lcd comes from one/two white cold cathodes inside the screen part. This is partly why it warms up. So you might have problem getting light at the rear of the lcd panel.

Why not use a couple of white LEDs instead or something, or use one of those lightup case badge sticky things. That way its reversible if something goes wrong

    ok nice comments.

a.) white LEDs instead - how would I power them, don't fancy wiring them on to the laptop mobo.

b.) lightup case badge sticky things - what are these ??? where do I see them / get them ??

c.) You want to advertise the styling of the thinkpad?? wasn't really thinking of a thinkpad logo, but there is nothing wrong with the thinkpad, I've had this one for years and it is just a solid laptop built for an agressive user.

    a) what voltage is given out by the charger/ battery?
    b) These are just very small EL sheets, problem is you would need to power an inverter for it and also wiring could be a problem.
