    Crazy laptop cooling mod idea

    Hi,

So I was thinking of this crazy laptop cooling mod idea....

You cut out bits of the laptop's cover from the bottom to expose the heatpipe(s). Then, you weld some copper fins to it. Then you build a box around them. So you in essence end up thickening the laptop, with the entire bottom section of it filled with metal to dissipate heat! Of course portability suffers a little, but if the fins are not too wide, it shouldn't be too bad.

YEA IT'S A CRAZY IDEA I just need someone else to tell me it is so I stop thinking about it....

I personally wouldn't defecate a new or even slightly used laptop with this mod.

How about to try it on a lot less expensive second hand grandpa-class machine? You could mod it as much as you like, perfect the process, and then when you are confident to move to a more serious notebook.

Re: Crazy laptop cooling mod idea

Big danger is messing with heat pipes, a heat pipe is a copper tube, with some form of wick in and a small amount of fluid, the ends are then sealed.
If you break that seal in any way you've destroyed the heat pipe and it's ability to transfer heat.

The way they are set up to work in a laptop cooler means that if you added fins in the middle of the pipe then you're going to be greatly reducing the heat that gets to the end with the fins.
in theory all you'd do is make a new heat spot in the middle without air flow to dissipate the heat pushing the cpu temperature up a degree or more.

Your best bet is ether to increase the air flow or replace the cooling assembly with something with a larger fin area.

Modifying the bottom half of a laptop case is possible, cutting holes in it then making a box like structure to fix onto it is doable, but be careful, as they are generally not flat esp at the edges of the laptop, which make thing a lot more tricky.

Or you could just cut out some aluminium from old double glazing frame and rest it on that.
