Building a NAS and need a case.
I'm looking for recommendations for a case for a NAS build. I'm reusing an old e6600 build and need a bit of space for HDD's, no bling as it will be put out of sight when finished.
I'm cheap so please bear that in mind and as such second hand is perfectly fine.
Thanks
Re: Building a NAS and need a case.
Size or Form factor requirements?
How many hard drives?
If you're on ATX then I'd look at the old rebel 9 cases from sharkoon (or the rebel 12 if you need LOADS of hard drives) Or the Rex8 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/rex-8...usb20-2x-audio
The reason for this is that it used just 5.25" bays, that might sound odd at first, but what it does give you is a lot of flexibility.
The rebel 9 would come with three 5.25" to 3.5" bracket kits, this means you can mount 1 hard drive per 5.25" bay and have lots of space around each drive for cooling, with up to 9 HDD (with additional kits)
or you can use any of the multi bay cages eg http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...mm-cooling-fan to fit 4 or more per three 5.25" bays.
Or use hot swap drive trays or bay cages for hotswap drives if required.
The rebel12 has 12x 5.25" bays with an additional 6x 3.5" as well, with 4 in 3 cages that's a possible 22x 3.5" hard drives in one case.
rebel 9 or 12 will be a more difficult find these days as they are pretty much EOL, 2nd hand is best option.
the Rex8 was the replacement for it and you can still pick them up
The other newer sharkoon cases don't use the only 5.25" bay system.
Re: Building a NAS and need a case.
E6600 is overkill for a NAS IMO. Sell it and put the money towards a microserver.
Re: Building a NAS and need a case.
Its existing (old but free) hardware and I plan on just more than file storage for it, but for now setting up a NAS is a reasonable first step.
As to the setup:
Stage 1 - I plan to store all my media on it, music, photos, vids etc.
Stage 2- XBMC backend
Stage 3- Myth TV
I'm looking at 4 HDD's - one for the OS and 3x2TB using ZFS, all SATA.
Having space for another pool of drives will be nice.
