    Capacitor problem (nf7-s) :E

    I just got my new waterblocks (see here) and there is a capacitor in the way of the mounting.

    Is it safe to move this capacitor, with extended wires? Im wondering what effect that will have on the capacitors and if it would make my board unstable.

    The capacitor thats the problem is the ones to the left of the cpu, my board only has 4 (as its a rev2 board, my old r1.1 had 6 iirc) and the top one is in the way of the left AMD64 mounting hole in the polycarb top of my block (not used for this mobo, obviously).
    I might have a go moving it tonight.

    Would it be best to compleatly replace it with a new one? or should that one be ok to resolder?

    As theres 4 caps, and the power regulation is 3phase, Im thinking is that cap is needed atall?

    Just desolder the cap and extend the legs around 1cm using some good guage and good quality wire. Should be fine.

    You'd probably find the motherboard would still run without it... but just extend it and see what happens...
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Lightbulb

    A little late for this since you already moved it but I'll post this in case someone else has the same problem since I know it works (Did it myself a few years ago)

    You can drill a hole slightly bigger than the capacitor in the mobo tray and simply solder the cap on the bottom of the motherboard so it sticks through the hole. You can find the spot to drill by putting a dab of molasses on the cap after it's soldered then positioning the mobo to the screw holes to touch the tray. I find molasses works good for this because it won't drip, and helps stop the drill bit from wandering as you start the hole. This is also good for hiding the caps if you don't like the look of them crowded all over the mobo, just make sure they are well tinned first for a solid connection.

    You can hide the solder dots with a permanent marker (NOT water based) the same colour as your mobo. For safety's sake.. don't play connect the dots.

    They also look good with UV paint on the silver part of the "cans" if you have UV lighting inside.
