    Heatercore cleaning

I got given an old heatercore from a dead mini.

What should i use to clean it out for watercooling?

I have tried water and also diet coke, both of which got loads of red gunky rust and deposits out.

The heatercore is made from aluminium.

Is there anything out there cheap that will clean it out better than water/coke?

use fat coke, and not the diet.. the extra sugar helps clean stuff

Either that or spend a few quid on a bottle of "Gunk" Put some of that in and swill it round.. leave it for 10 minutes and it'll be lush in there

Dont use food stuffs, It will stay in there and help algy grow in the future.

Firstly any rust will be from iron, not alu, so its not from your heatercore but the other parts of the cars cooling system.
The bits of crap are not attached in any way, liquids wont loosen them, and they definatly wont disolve them - unbless you dont mind the alu disolving first... in which case nitric acid
You need to push the bits out and the best way way is water. Connect it up to the mains water and the pressure will remove any crap in there. You can reduce the pressure by turning on other taps in your house. If the heatercore cant stand mains pressure (~35PSI) then its not very good and you shouldnt use it anyway.. becuase itll probably leak.

If you havent got any easy way to connect it up, you will just have to push tubing against the tap outlet and let your hands freeze, in which case turn the other taps off, you need all the pressure you can get as most of it will be lost to the spray going in your face
Ive done this with two nova heatercores and it worked very well and only took about 30 mins each, even though these were in quite bad condition.

Also its worth noting you might not want all the crap blocking up your plughole so if your doing it indoors, feed the outlet into a bucket to collect the crap, which will then sink so you canpour away the water.

You can also clean the outside - the tanks at the top and bottom, quite easly using schotchbrite which will scratch very lightly into the surface removing crap and oxide layer (which will almost instantly reform..) to make it shiny again (but not mirror shiny!).
If you want after you can mask off the fins and spray the tanks to make it look better, I didnt bother with that, however I made a shroud out of alu to hide them.

Hot water mixed with bleech 'n coke (deadly combo ), run it 3-5 times and then flush it well with water another 5-8 times to clean completely (again with hot water).
