Advice needed in choosing pumps for watercooling loop
Hi all,
I have a question regarding the pumps and pump controllers that I hope some of you will be able to answer for me:
As far as pump controllers go i'm thinking of getting either one of these (popular) ones - Lamptron CW611 or the Aquaero 6.
The thing that is confusing me somewhat is which pump I can use with those controllers.
I've come across the Alphacool VPP655 and the XSPC D5 pump unit as well.
Will either of those work with the above controllers? They both come with the manual speed control dial on the back(1-5) along with the rpm(?) cable and power cable. If I set the setting to 5 on each of these pumps and then connect the power cable to the above controllers, will I be able to adjust the speed accordingly?
My first real build with WC'ing kit so your advice would be appreciated :)
Thanks all.

Any particular reason you feel you need one? It's certainly not necessary.
Re: Advice needed in choosing pumps for watercooling loop
A lot depends on the loop setup.
Generally people ether run the radiator fans at a fixed speed and control the pump speed or run the pump at a fixed speed and control the radiator speed.
Which way to go depends on the loop and your water cooling goal.
One thing I will point out is that there's not a great deal of difference in pumps because there's only a couple of manufactures who actually make them. (Laing is the main one who make both the D5 and DDC pumps which are the most commonly found pumps)
The two you've listed are great examples as they are both D5 pumps made by Laing, so really it shouldn't make much difference which one you pick.

Thanks Pob225 for your reply. I just thought it would be an issue being able to control them using the controller since they had a manual adjust on the back?
Thanks.

My d5 Vario is perfectly happy being controlled by the motherboard header as long as it's not set on the lowest setting. However, when properly isolated it's basically silent even at full chat. Personally I'd wire it straight to the psu then have the fans wired to a mobo header for speed control (or depending how many channels of control you have, stick the pump on a header also.)
Re: Advice needed in choosing pumps for watercooling loop
Actually you have to be careful with running pumps off the motherboard or a fan controller, depending on pump, motherboard or fan controller of course, but many can pull quite high wattage/amps and can potentially burn out motherboard fan headers or fan controllers.
Re: Advice needed in choosing pumps for watercooling loop
Thanks both for your replies :) Didn't occur to me to connect it to a fan header because, as Pob225 says, I didn't think it would have the juice - and it looks nicer with a controller anyway :) I'm assuming the Lamptron CW611/Aquaero 6 are built for these purposes heh =)
Thanks again for the advice.
