what is commonly called an "LED strip" is a strip of plastic with an integrated circuit printed on it, surface mount LED's and resistors on it, you can buy it in rolls however, what is generally sold is pre-made kits, a fixed length of led strip light, with double sided tape backing pre-applied and wired up to a 4 pin molex or 3pin fan header for power.
If you buy a pre-made kit you do NOT want to start cutting it up unless you know what you are doing.
The strip can only be cut to certain lengths due to the circuit.
Don't get me wrong I do love LED strip, especially the kits, they are simple to use and very effective, I'd use one over a cold cathode tube any day
There's loads of places on ebay that do them as well as the "brands"
The main issue with them is corners, because this stuff is a tape you cannot bend it left or right, so for case lighting you might one or two strips.
Beyond that there's not a great deal of difference between them, one thing to look out for is the number of led's pre length, which is something some of the "brand" kits don't mention, they'll say how long it is but not how many led's
