Long shot...but anyone here with electronics and/or programming experience?

Im looking to have an adapter made, and im gathering information to see if its even possible. Basically, I need a device that sits between the PS2 console and the DualShock2 controller. What i need it to do is to swap around and proportionally translate the signals of the D-Pad and the left analog stick.

At first I thought it may be as easy as swapping the wires inside the pad, but ive been told they work completely different. They are both analog control methods, but the D-Pad has 4 pins each with 100 (or 256 cant remember) levels of pressure sensitivity, but i've been told that the analog sticks work via co-ordinates to map their position. Which is why i think i will need to go as far as making an adapter that would translate the signals over so that they make sense when swapped.

Big task? It would probably require some wizz programming, but i really dont know even if it is possible. But i know much more complex versions have been achived, such as this:

This one goes as far as to translate an optical mouse movement to smooth on screen action. So i think what i need wont be too hard. Also i only really need one made, or if they can be done cheap enough then i''d do a small batch for the sake of it. Its just for personal use.

How would i gain the knowledge to program it and all that? I assume i'd have to first understand how the controller communicates with the console.

Yup - You could quite easily program that onto a PIC chip so long as you could write a mathmatical expression for it.

You would need some of the more expesive ones probably though as you want analogue inputs and outputs for at least one thing.

Would it not be digital? I mean, the controller must send a digital signal to the console?

How much would it cost me to get someone else to do it?
