    fan change on a HP LP1000R

    Guys,

    I have HP LP1000R server. It is 1U form so some pretty clever kit is squashed in.

    the fans however sound like a jet engine and are in quite an unusual layout.

    Would any of you care to recommend a path and advice to help me change the fans to quiet models, and also recommend replacment fans that will do the job for me.

    thanks

    dissapointed you hard headed modders can't find my a quiet fan to replace the one in this, and perhaps offer some tips or notes on replacing this

    I'd recommend against putting slower fans in a 1U server, they are loud and fast for a reason.

    The fans are either 60mm, or some weird blower assembly. Not too common I'm afraid.

    This is why more servers have temperature controlled fan speeds now - the things were very loud, but sometimes they need to be.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    it would be ok if it was loud when busy and heating up the cpu, but this thing sound like the enterprise at warp speed on tick over

    Clearly it doesn't have temp controlled fans, which is a pity.

    pity = gutting

    its only one fan channeling air down a cannel across the cpu's

    Its on full throttle %101 of the time.

    I'm trying to get some OS tools to slow it down or control it, but its not that easy.

    Hence why I was looking for the ballsey modders to step up

    Definitely NOT for home use

    I'm having an old LP1000r home with me to install a system, and then colocate it. Very loud indeed. Stressful, even for the short period I need it here. And it only has 2 cool-running PIII's. I have not read about a solution, so my only advice is: don't use one at home.

    By the way, did somebody get Solaris 10 to run on it (with Netraid-1M)?

    herzog,

    This machine is run in a lab so its not for home use so don't panic, it runs test and reporting services for some small app dev projects.

    with regard to solaris, I have a few points.

    Solaris 2.6/7 on X86 - to early to be worth running
    Solaris 8 / 9 on intel better but still running it on HP kit, espcially a net server is a tough challange, I'd stay clear of it. Solaris was meant for Sparc at the moment, although its coming along.

    I've got linux running with the net raid and the performance is great, and its a great raid device. One of the reasons we snapped it up for a solid test box and stats box.

    I'll be happy to share my linux config with you if you want to get it running.

    There are options - but I wouldn't recommend them for a server - they are usually designed to need a certain level of cooling and supplied with it... You could however 7V or even 5V the fans, install a rheostat or two if you have the space or if the fans are connected to motherboard headers and the mobo has a monitoring chip that's supported use speedfan to control them - http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php. Or simply replace them with slower / quieter fans.

    A lower voltage on the fan could do the trick for you, as malfunction indicated, but there are also 3 scsi disks to cool, and HP probably designed it to function under the most unfavourable heat-conditions. There must be hardware monitoring avalable, especially since it's a server, so you can check the temperatures.

    As to linux, thanks for the offer. SuSE 9.1, debian (knoppix 3.7, nodma), FreeBSD 5.3 and Windows 2000 (with driver disk) run fine, so Solaris 10 (open source!!) will eventually run on it, given time. With its 'regions' and linux-compatibility, Solaris 10 seems very interesting as a server-OS, and free is a fine price to try it out. I'm doing so now under VMWare on SuSE 9.1 (installs without much problem).

    hardware monitoring / controlling tools are toptool, however this has now been discontinued and I can't find a place to download it from HP.

    the new insite manager version has replaced it, however there is no version for the netserver ?

    I'd love some sort of hardware/monitoring controlling for the fans.

    Toptools 5.6 (final version) for Windows 2000 is still there (just select your server, with 'download software and drivers', and then Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, and there it is. But I haven't seen hardware monitoring in it (only had a very short look). The linux version is probably more limited and for old versions of linux (not sure though).
