LED / Lights to mount behind a wall mounted TV

I'm looking for suggestions/shops on where/what lights to get to mount behind a wall mounted LCD TV.


the way I pictured it was a TV mounted against the wall and a pair of blue lights shining either up or side ways out of each side of the TV.

So you'd have a TV with 2 blue lights shining out of the top just in from the corners, or shinging out of the right/left of the TV in the middle

not sure the products you suggested are %100 what I'm looking for but yes, your on the right idea.

the products you linked for may stick out a little too much, from behind the TV, that why I was looking at some LED style lights as they have pretty much no foot print on the wall, also the ones you linked too would work as one long vague style beam coming out of the top which could look cool too.

if you imagine something like this

(These lights wouldn't work as they stick out to much from the wall to be mounted behind the TV)

Depending on how the light diffuses, consider buying a couple of those kits - if they are like mini point-lights then you might need 3 per side to make it more "ambient".

It is a very cool effect, very soothing when watching TV too.

the tube is one option, and one I've thought about.

Depending on the brightness of the LED's 3 clusters of 3 LED's could work quite nicley as Paul suggests.

The nice thing is they are not expensive, I may get both and just try it.

Yeah, I was thinking if they were far back (but bright) enough behind the unit and reflected off the wall or TV slightly then it would naturally diffuse - but I guess it would depend on the length of one side anyway.

Not sure if it's possible with that kind of kit, but I would like it if it could be controlled with a rheostat or something to alter the brightness to suit (I'm kind of spoiled as my TV has "ambilight" built in and uses the dominant colour from the screen so is dynamic).

Though I'm sure they wouldn't be a waste of money in any case, they could be used in a PC or for bookshelf lighting very easily.

next question is now, is how to get some sort of power to them without using a PC (there is a HTPC under the TV so I could power it of that.)

Use a simple wallwart dude. Also put a vreg after them cause not all are regulated and it's better to be safe than sorry...

You can also get the LEDs off Maplins or Farnell...the 10cd ones usually cost a bit but you can get like 50pcs for cheap off eBay, shipped from Hongkong

Wiring these up are pretty simple, electronics 101.

if you're still looking, Kustom (and PCW) sell Antec dual cathodes which get their power from a USB port, which might be better with the HTPC, failing that a powered hub would probably do it.

yes, they look quite good, and being 2 seperate lights you could position them well.


damn, thats 3 items from kustompc's now that I could do with buying to try.

I wonder if kustom would donate some freebies so I could do a case study/write up.
