Re: My new Build Project, with

Sorry that I've not posted for a while - my mind has been on other things...

But, to pick up the story, having received the CPU and replaced the PSU the next step of the build was a bench test - or rather a kitchen table test, to be more accurate.

Step one, accumulate all the kit

And start to put it all together, first lay out the motherboard and attach the power cables

Next to fit the two SSDs as these go flat on the Mobo, underneath the GPU.

Then, put the first two sticks of RAM in - the test pair denoted as AMD tuned.

Onto the CPU, handled with all due care and respect

And get ready to install it

    Installed

Which means the next step is to sort out the cooler, which will be worth doing now as the space available in the case is not conducive to fitting the beast after the Mobo is in place whilst retaining all knuckle skin.

    That's for the next post!

Memtest them, to heck and back. Some of those Vengeance sticks really don't like AMD 3000 series CPUs.

I'll come on to that - this one has not yet run its course!

My beef was with the 16MB sticks, where it seemed you could only get the ones marked V4.32 which basically didn't work with a 3900X. But it honestly put me off the whole brand, I flinch when I see those sticks now!

Re: My new Build Project, with

Ok, a sunny Sunday and I've had my exposure to support Vitamin D levels, so here's the nest instalment.

First of all, before applying thermal paste to the CPU, I cleaned it.

    Then applied the paste

I used the generally all over at a more or less consistent thickness approach.

The cooler is a large beast, and time to check all the parts to make sure it is fitted securely

It can fit a variety of CPUs and has a couple of different sets of bits. Here's the AMD bracket set

    First, remove the stock coolerbrackets

    Second, apply the spacers

    Third, screw down the brackets

Fourthly, check the cooler heat transfer plate

All well, and shiny, so fifth on with the cooler

Stage six to screw it down, with the handy and very magnetic screwdriver supplied with the cooler

So that's the cooler in place

And finally we need to slide the central fan into place

    So that's the cooler attached

The two fans link to go onto the one CPU fan header

    Next, on with the GPU

Re: My new Build Project, with

The GPU, a PowerColor RX5700 is next to go on to the motherboard

This was an easy plug in

Now to get the power lines attached

The HDMI cable attached between the GPU and the monitor

Ready to go - and you can see here, and in the picture above, how much the GPU sits on top of the chipset cooler, and also the two M2 slots where the SSDs are. There's also the aspect of the space between the GPU and the CPU cooler, which I'll be thinking about when putting this lot in the case so that air flow isn't compromised.

Time for power on, the usual hold of the breath!

So, that's a bench-test success. Just a quick noodle around the BIOS and then I'll be testing the two pairs of RAM that I have, to find some sort of resolution as to whether there's really any difference between two.

Then I'll take it apart (except leave the cooler in situ) and install it all in the case...

    Hi,

Out of interest, if you don't mind me asking. Did you consider any other cases before settling on the be quiet! pure base 500? And if so what sold you on that particular case over others?

How have you been finding the temperatures and noise in the pure base 500 case?

I'm interested to hear any thoughts as I am looking for a case of a similar size, weight, spec. for my next PC. Other cases I am looking at at the moment (and I'm really only interested in non-windowed) are the fractal design define C and also it's meshify C equivalent.

    Cheers,

    Hi Spider

I did look around but had a wish list of no RGB, not black, not windowed, not a monolithic block, mid-sized but easy to fit things and keep the cables tidy. This one fitted that bill, whilst also looking nice. The closest alternative was a Lian Li but this one just looked better, in my opinion.

Temperature wise, I have fitted two fans in the front and one in the back. The big Dark Pro 4 cooler sits over the CPU, and really fills the space between the top of the case and the GPU (I'll be posting some more pictures soon). I therefore fitted one front fan high up to blow directly into that CPU fan, which pushes its exhaust directly out to the rear fan. I also shifted the lower front fan down as far as possible, without it blowing into the undercroft, which houses the HDDs and PSU. I also lined the bottom of the case with polythene sheet and also blocked up the rear PCIe slot vents so that all the air from that fan would be driven up into the fans of the GPU, to maximise the cooling there. The exhaust of the GPU goes up, towards the CPU cooler and so is pushed out to the back by the prevailing current of air there. I also blocked up the top air vent, to make sure the case doesn't have too much that would cause turbulence.

The effect of this is a stable set up. I usually cruise at light loads anywhere between 35C and 50C and hit 70C to 75C when pushing it. I have got it all the way up to 95C on a stress test, but even then it was stable.

Overall, I'm really pleased with the case.

    Hope this is helpful!

Re: My new Build Project, with

    Hi Helios,

That's really helpful, thanks! My case requirements are very similar to yours (no RGB, no window, mid-sized), so sounds like the pure base 500 may well fit the bill.

Were the fans you used the ones that came with the case? (I think they are be quiet fans and those are meant to be quite good?) Or did you buy others?

For myself, I am probably going to go liquid cooling rather than air, I've had liquid cooling in my current PC and I've been happy with that (which is getting on for 10 years old now! hence me starting to look for a replacement). I think I prefer having this rather than the big air cooler, since some of the time the PC will be getting transported about and I'm not sure about having a big metal block on-top of the mobo potentially putting more stress on it under transport.

So that will probably mean a bit of a different fan arrangement (depending on if the radiator for the liquid cooling goes at the front or the top), I've not quite worked out what would be best. Something (else) to think about!

    Thanks for the info!

    Hi Spider,

    No probem.

Two of the three fans came preinstalled in the case, and I purchased an extra one to the one at the front. Easy to fit and adjust, all are be quite fans which are nice and quiet.

The case does have good availability of space for liquid cooling rads in the front and top. I suppose the positioning will need to take into account whether the rad is pulling air into the case or pushing it out, and thinking about where the air for the rad is going to exit/enter the case.

    Cheers

Re: My new Build Project, with

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

My initial thoughts would be to have a 280mm AIO radiator at the front pulling air in and exhausting out the back without anything else up top but maybe I need to reconsider adding intake fan to the top. Or putting AIO rad up top for exhaust as well as rear and having a couple fans for intake front. I'm not planning on overclocking my processor, in the past that has just caused me too many issues. So maybe don't need so many fans. Not sure will have to investigate and ask around for advice.

    Cheers again,

    (\(\;;/)/)

    Hi again,

Have now also been looking at the Dark Rock Pro 4 (or the smaller non-pro version) as an alternative to AIO. I think I recall seeing (somewhere) that you intended to occasionally transport your PC. Did you have any worries at all about the big heavy cooler stressing the mobo/CPU? Do you remove the cooler before transport or anything like that?

    Cheers,

    Hi Spider

Yes, I relocated to France, where I have taken up permanent residence.

For the trip I simply repacked the case, with all inside still in situ, into the cardboard and polystyrene packing case it came in. This was then laid flat on my back seat with other luggage around it to stop it moving.

I didn't remove the GPU or the cooler as I was pretty confident that, securely laid on it's side, the components wouldn't have experienced any more force than when standing up as normal.

I am pleased to report that there were no mishaps on the 1,000 plus Kms journey - although I did spend a couple of weeks fighting with Windows, Linux and a couple of fading HDDs, but that's another story!

    All the best
