    The ease of molex manipulation

    Oooh, nothing like alliteration in the title!

    Anyway, I was putting my PC back together today after a motherboard failure. I had to fit a new 12cm because the other is attached to my radiator and I am not using watercooling for the next couple of months.

    The fan is a 12V Panflo - quiet things as a rule. NOT this one - squeaking like a... squeaky thing. Anyway, I thought a 7V mod was in order, but the molex only had two pins in it so no cable chopping would work.

    However, with a small screwdriver in the action end of the molex I discovered how easy it is to move the pins around. Just push the clip in and pull at the other end and you've removed the pin!

    A little bit of attention and a small screwdriver goes a long way, it seems...

    molex decay

    Oh my gosh! I'm turning into a pedant! I actually just looked up alliteration 'cos I thought it needed 3 consecutive words starting with the same letter!

    I've found the ease of molex manipulation to be an absolute pain in my latest PC. After a PC internal inspection I have a very tricky balancing act trying to hold the side panel and refit the side exhaust fan and this is definitely not helped by a bad quality molexes. First thought I was weak, so tried forcing molexes together, then realised that the pins were all misaligned. Very easy to realign with a pen.
    Does anyone think that my wibbly molexes might be indicative that the included 500W PSU is of dubious quality? I've got to replace it when I put my 2nd video card in for SLI anyway, just might do it sooner if I've I got a potential PC killing PSU.

    I have a few 120mm fans with molex power cables, but never can remember which cables to switch round. Any pics of before and after perhaps, so I can make my fans quieter?

    you're almost right, zak

    the red line is 5v - the idea is, if you substitute a red & black on a fan, then it gets a 12-5=7v difference instead of 12-0=12v difference, leading to lower noise.

    If that's the case, move the black one to the empty hole on the edge and you'll have 7V.

    gottit....well, its worked on Sair's Hermes, because my ears BLED whenI built that and the fan was 12v....what a SHREAK

    but its whisper quiet on 7v
