    Project: Fourth Street

This will be my official entry to the Mod Comp. I don't get the newspaper.. but, tomorrow I'll run out and pick one up to make it legal.

Alright. A suit case. A case of suits.. The four suits in poker. That will be the theme of this case. Diamonds, hearts, clubs, and spades will all find themselves dwelling happily among a black-and-frost colored case. White LED's, black cables, clear cables, a few well-placed windows, and absolute silence are the elements that will and must be in this case.

So. The first piece of this particular design that I felt like working on was the CD drive. It's old-skool, like erything else in this PC. But, that's okay with me.

As most of you know, CD drives looked something like this...

    ...with the face-plate removed, obviously

And after a little dremelling on the top (free-hand of course), we have this..

It's all about the details, baby.

Right now, it's about half-way through. All of the edges on the top are rounded out completely and up-close it looks ace. Which you might notice here...

Tomorrow, I will finish shaping and sanding the middle holdy-downy bit, and then sand and paint it all, including the inside bits. I want to replace the horrid yellow led on the front with a nice, clean white one, and pop some leds inside of it too, so it'll be all lit up and nice inside.

    Lemme know what ya think.

...first of all, this guy is obnoxious. second of all, i got a stupid newspaper, but had to drive ten miles to get one. all of the gas stations around me seem to close down at 10 for whatever reason.

    word.

i now have two 30x36 sheets of lexan to work with!

i set about cutting up a rope light to salvage the led's... and then thought.. 'hey, this is way too much work. i should just order some.' and so i did. in about 5 days, i shall have 100 11k mcd 5mm led's, which should be more than sufficient to light up the inside of my cd drive, hd( maybe), and the rest of the case.

today was a get-stuff-for-the-project day, so no work was done, but, the materials for this project are coming together. i am pretty much set to just bust it all out in a week or so now. but i think i'll throw enough tedious jobs into the mix to make it drag out a bit longer.

wind blowing, humidity high... not a good day to paint. but i did it anyway. because im impatient. plus, it's like that eryday here. so after grinding down that aforementioned middle bit, then sanding the edges down to round them out, i hit up all the pieces to be painted with some 150. just to be sure the paint stuck. the black im doing is a flat-black primer coat, then i'll clear coat that with a semi-gloss after it's been wet-sanded. i like the understated paint, i'm not painting a lamborghini.

first.. or second coat on the main bits. btw. it loox gray. thats the camera. its black as all hell. pitch black, like fresh tar.

then i hit up the screws,

and after taping off the drive itself, hit the tray, and some of the surrounding inside area.

i let erything sit about 15 min's between each coat, and sprayed a total of three coats on the main bits, one on the screws, and two on the tray and company. after i hit erything with the final coat, i went inside to peep some grindage and mess around on my main rig. after a few hours had passed, i assumed the primer was set, and ready for some wet-sanding.

i was wrong. i picked up the top piece, and immediately noticed metal showing through where my fingers were touching... then i gave it a light dusting with my finger. and off came the primer.

well. super. i have no idea what the other parts are like, or why this happened, but i'll just assume the 85% constant humidity in good ol' houston is to blame... and i'll let the rest of them sit undisturbed through the night. we'll see how they look, and i'll figure out how to get this done as soon as possible. tomorrow, if all goes well, the lexan will be cut to shape and have heart shapes frosted on. i'm thinking some 400 grit and some liner's tape will do the trick. *crosses fingers*
