    HDD Switcher

I'm currently planning on making a DIY hard disk switcher, but having some trouble finding the old style wired HDD jumpers...

Does anyone have any spare... or know where I can get some??

I've tried a few shops where they do PC recon jobs, and also waiting for my next local computer fair.... but I'm an enthusiastic, impatient modder and I WANT THEM NOW!!!

Any ideas or (preferably UK based) links etc greatly appreciated ?!

Why bother? There's already one in your PC...

...the way I multi-boot is to leave both drives in and powered up. Both are connected to the same IDE channel: one as master and the other as slave...

...so to switch between the two I just enter the BIOS and turn the master slave on/off (ie set the master hard drive from auto to none).

...so when you switch the master drive off thru the BIOS, it forces the PC to boot from the "slave"??

(Forgive me for sounding like a newbie, but I've been using shop-built Intel PC's until I built my own XP2600 system recently )

Yep, you got it exactly. It take a bit longer than flipping a switch but it's free and there's no chance of accidentally flipping it while the PC is on.

I used to use a removable drive cage / caddy system. I bought two 5.25" bay drive caddies (but I only needed to use one of them), one drive with Win2K, the other with Linux. I mostly used Win2K so that caddy stayed in there most of the time. But when I wanted to play around with Linux, I just shut down, pull out the Win2K drive and slotted in the Linux drive and I was good to go. From shut down to reboot - less than 5 seconds.

hmmmm.... yes, you got a very good point there - cos as with a lot of other things, even when taking precautions, accidents still happen don't they??

and @ spikegifted, I'll check out the prices of those caddys, but I'm pretty much on a limited budget... but they sound pretty useful and easy to use too.

At the moment I have my main HDD, and swapping between two different slave drives, which is OK, but a bit of a pain having to open my case all the time.
