Hey. Im thinking about some acoustic material to make my machine quiter. Ive looked on quietpc.com for this stuff.
Does it really help to dampen sound?
does it increase temps and reduce airflow?
thanks

Does reduce sound, but only if youve got vibratey panels, it does help a bit with high pitched fans too, especially the fatter stuff.
Should increase temps or drop airflow provided you dont put it somewhere really stupid.
you mean shouldn't right?Originally Posted by herulach

yeah i did mean should.
Simple solution there gazzy is to get a front intake. Or see what your temps are like by covering your vents temporarily with paper or card.
When I installed sound deadening in my machine my temps DROPPED. Now this might have been due to something else (like cleaning my PC out) but I've never had heat problems.
Not only look at inside the machine, look at whats behind the machine, something I really found made quite a difference was because my PC was backing onto a flat wall, that was reflecting alot of the sound from the rear fans back into the room, just stick some acoustic deadening (whatever your choice is) behind the PC - it can really help
If your serious about this, I'd throw the deadening kits you can buy out of the window, they do work but they are overpriced. http://www.studiospares.com/productd...INSULATION&p=2 RockWool is used profesionally as a middle layer to remove sound. In a pack they'll be plenty more than you'd ever need for a PC but it really works(although be warned, it isn't pretty, lol).
In my machine I use a layer of Rockwool and carpet (one after each other) in the larger places, then just carpet or thinned out RockWool in the gaps. I run one 92mm fan in my PSU on its lowest setting, one 80mm fan 5ved on the rear and one 80mm fan 5vted on my CPU. Zalman on my main GFX card and my otherone is passive. I have 7 HDDs in my machine and run BOINC ... I've never had my machine fail due to heat, even during the summer - at this moment my CPU is at 56C and stable![]()

Gah again, wrote should, for the record i really mean shouldnt
I really need a front intake but my case doesnt support it. Suppose this shows the importance of a good case.
you migth get a similar effect with the addition of a top blowhole, although it prob ont be quite so pronounced.
i think ti helps, but be aware it will increase temps slightly (more so on smaller cases).
The biggest thing though is by some rubber gromits for your fans, they are liek 10p for a pack of 100 from your local diy store.
I was thinking of trying this, but i have a large window in the side of my case. I guess there would be little point, no?
I have given up trying to keep my pc quiet. I guess water cooling is the only option now. It's not really that bad but i have down such a good job with my cables and have a nice case which i don't want to have to hide under a desk.
You migth find that its still worth it. The main benefit is to stop the panels vibrating, and sice plexi is usually far thicker than a standard panel, it shouldnt be as bad anyway.Originally Posted by dangerous_dom
