LCD Displays - which is better?

    Crystalfontz - http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/635/index.html

    or

    Matrix Orbital - http://www.matrixorbital.com/index.p...lcd-mx2-series

I would presume the Matrix Orbital, but wanted to confirm.

    Thanks!

I like the CrystalFontz one myself, but Matrix Orbitals are infamous for being reliable

Didn't you go to HGLAN down Mile End some time ago?

Yeah, that's my quandry. Matrix Orbitals have a massivly good rep, but CrystalFontz manage to get their 20x2 LCD's into a 3.5" drive bay and their 20x4 into a single 5.25" drive bay.

Nope. There are LOADS of GingerNinja's out there now, despite the fact that it has been my online nick for the past 6 years. Changed it last year to match my long-standing domain name so that I can reclaim my uniqueness.

FYI: if you take the MO 2 line display aout of the moounting and you can cut pastic tidy, you can mount them in the 3.5bays,

and the 4 liners removed of their drive bay casing will fit in a 5.25 bay
    It is Inevitable.....

a "little" room on the 2 liners but if you bare with me I'll show you that the 5.25 ones fit almost perfectly.

I stand corrected, I must have been thinking of the smaller 2 line displays in the 5.25 chassis.

just took some photos and the 4 line displays do stick out into other bays

Ah that's ok then... the one I met at the LAN i think I pissed off really bad, I killed him more than anyone else in BF1942, HL2: DM, etc. But he was using a trackball, MAN WTF

Yea I can see why so many people like the name GingerNinja... possibly one of the best nicknames ever conceived.

erm if your not scared by programming your own software to display stats/winamp vis/what-ever which really is only an afternoon job to hack something together, get the crystalfontz one, save money.

Hmmm. I was initially tempted by the 631 as it is a 20x2 display (the same as the MX212) but it goes into a 3.5" drive bay and I have a spare one which I cannot see me filling up, however, getting a 5.25" bay LCD will mean that it will be at the top of my case and I
    can probably read it easier.

Off the forums, I have been recommended to go for the MO MX212 as LCDC is apparently superb, but I am still sorely tempted to go for the CrystalFontz 635.

    - With the 635 I get 20x4 in a single 5.25" bay (I only have 1 spare). With the MO I only get 20x2.

    - I have been told that the 635 you don't get horizontal or vertical lines
between the characters (can anyone confirm this?)

    - LCD Smartie (http://lcdsmartie.sourceforge.net/) is perceived to be just as
good as LCDC, but is freeware and works on both. Plugins are slightly more spare though: http://lcdsmartie.sourceforge.net/smartied.htm

Wish someone would make a FRAPS plug-in for LCD Smartie as it cannot be all that different to LCDC, surely?

Any more suggestions? Other than make a flipping decision?

the 635 is a much better peice of kit imo, the segments are right next to each other thou so that might mean it looking a bit cramped with text display.

I've yet to ever meat any electronic engineer who recomends matrix orbital. They sell to idoits, granted idoits who have money (which i do have respect for them been able to do). But its nothing remotely specail.

I got me one of these:

    From http://www.componentsuk.co.uk/catalo...products_id=18

Which for the money can't be beat IMHO Did need a parallel port but the that wasn't an issue for me.

As for software LCDSmartie is good but crashes on my dual core system..
