    Watercooling an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium

    Hi All,
So I've finally taken the plunge and watercooled my PC. Surprisingly it still works! It now POSTs at some ridiculous clock speeds! X2 4400+ will post at over 2.6Ghz

Having taken the cooling pipe off the chipset, I'm worried about the small chips (USB controllers?) up near the back plate. These were covered by the other end of the heat sink. Is it worth me getting some heatsinks for them?

    Cheers...

    Tom

They arent the usb controllers but mofset's from memory, its a good idea to keep them cool. A couple of little heatsinks for them would be a good idea.

I was wondering the same thing really... perhaps some BGA ram sinks would do it?
I did notice that the original cooler made only partial contact with them anyway!

    Hmm...

Any idea where I can get small heatsinks?

I was just looking at http://www.overclock.co.uk and they have a few different ones. Are they all pretty much of a muchness?

    Cheers...

Ok, well first off - stay away from overclockers. Bad people. Very bad people (repeat until sunk in)

    Try:

    From someone like http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_2802.html

    Or even:

    From: http://www.componentsuk.co.uk/catalo...roducts_id=276

BOTH places offer cheaper postage for such a small item and won't fleece you as soon as look at you. Do I sound bitter? Well I am

OR take an old CPU heatsink and cut to fit (i'm prolly gonna look at this method)

Just out of curiosity, did you remove the heatpipe to watercool the chipset or because you have one of them new-fangled upside down cases?

To watercool. That being said, even if I hadn't gone for watercooling, I would have probably gone for some other sort of cooling, that pipe gets hotter than the sun!

Same here - you have to remove it to watercool the chipset. Never tried it on air tho

    overclock does not equal overclockers!

www.overclock.co.uk are a very different kettle of fish to the other one.

Why buy them when you can make them?

Surely you have some old heatsink lying around somewhere, no? You just removed one didn't you? Put it into a vice, then saw it into smaller pieces with a junior hacksaw or razor saw. Just make sure that you file/brush off all metal shavings or else they'll short something out.

Thats exactly what I did with my KV7 (not the shorting out bit...). When I got my mobile & started pushing voltages around/above 2v with a tower cooler that didn't blow across the bare mosfets, they starting reaching scary temperatures of 120-130dc, & they're only rated at 150dc. So I took the heatsink from an old 5200, sawed it up, then attached the pieces to the mosfets with my tried & trusted method of cyanoacrylate (super glue) & thermal paste - you out thermal paste in the middle, & a dab of ca on the edge to hold the sink on. The chips run a lot cooler now.

And yes, overclock are a wonderful company with great service & delivery (pity they changed to initial over business post though) whereas overclockers are.... well don't go there. Although don't believe everything you read, because the convention here is that micro direct are sound guys, when I had to wait 2 months for my delivery & didn't get a reply to any of my contacts at all during that time.
