Most placeswill charge you a lot for the prep work, you can get a mirror finish on alumin pretty easily with sandpaper and polish and a bit of elbow grease. If youre gonna shell out for something like that, do it right and get it anodised a sweet colour, red or blue would be my choice.

well one comapny said THEY could not do it and recomended doing the same thing. So mabe sanding and polishing is the best way. Does anodising just take away the chrome and so make it like it was before lol? Also aluminium has an oxide layer so how can it be shiney? and do i seal it to stop it getting dirty - ie that like black layer you get build up on shiney metal?

Anodising builds up a thick oxide layer on the surface of the aluminium, you can put a dye in this for a very hardwearing coloured finish.
The oxide layer is very thin so you can't really see it. Once polished up aluminium will retain it's shine pretty well. The black layer you're thinking of is tarnish, commonly affects silver. Aluminium doesn't tarnish.

I've got some aluminium I buffed to a mirror finish a couple of years ago, it's still mirror shiney now.

Er no. Steel oxidizes to rust, which is a bad thing. You can galvanize steel which is a method of applying a zinc plating to the steel objects. This prevents rust as zinc doesn't rust or indeed oxidize much at all and gives it a shiny metal finish.
