    Flashing High power leds help

So, im currently in the process (a very slow one) of making a 3W luxeon helmet lamp for the bike. Ideally i want about 4 to 5 hours from it, which will get me a ride + comfortable backup time. So, the question is this, i can either use a 3000mah battery, which should run it for around 5.5 hours, or, i was thinking i could maybe knock together some kind of pwm circuitry. Does anyone know of any? It'll be running off a buckpuck and drawing about an amp, so im guessing ill be looking at using something to switch a transistor

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i completely forgot i said i'd send you a PIC when my blanks had arrived.

i'll nock up a 8 pin PIC12F629 or whatever i can find, with a varying set of PWM values, and sleep mode so it takes very little power when not in use, ie, allow one touch operation to cycle the modes. My exams finish end of this month, and i'll be doing some pic'ing anyone (modding airsoft rifle ) so give me a shout then if you can wait.

if not, you want a 555 timer, set up as an astable multivibrator sounds funny, but is very simple. to cut power, simply cut power to the 555. what voltage you driving the buckpuck at? remeber bipolar's have a voltage drop.

Np man, id forgotten about it too. It'll be running off a 7.2V nimh racepack, or possibly 7.4V of lion if i can find an old camcorder going cheap. I think ill take you up on the pic offer, only need it for half an hour at the most at the moment, and since it will have to go on the input side of it anyway it shouldnt be that big a deal to add in afterward.

nimh really aren't bad at all, they're easy to charge, and you can charge them very quickly too. if you look at the 'new' uniross sprint chargers, they bost 30mins for 2 * AAs at 2500mAh!

advantage of one pic is you can use that to do your on off, and even toggle some brightness levels too.

yeah, but lion are really light, so the whole thing could go on my head. If i could charge them id be using replacement G2 ipod batteries, cheap, and ludicsourly high energy density. (battery about 5mm thick the size of an old ipod is 1300mah)

Brightness control would be sweet, a dim mode would prob be quite good for reading maps etc

well i've given up coding, else i'd post some psydo code!

but idea is you can have a one button operation, which makes the PIC cycle modes, so like off, 5% duty, 10%, 20%,40%
