Firstly premium comes with a 20 gig hard drive, secondly some games perform better with the hard drive as it can be used for caching. Also without a hard drive you can't download game demo's or multiplayer maps. You won't be able to take part in beta's either should you want to as you won't be able to store the game files anywhere. Either find a cheap core deal and get the 20 gig hard drive from scan.co.uk or buy the premium

secondly having not played online with xbox, is there alot of dowloadable's do i need them do they make the game more playable etc..?

'GAME' are doing a deal ''Xbox 360 Core Console with Viva Pinata, Fuzion Frenzy 2 and 64MB Memory Unit'' all for £199 .This is what has brought my attention to, 'why pay out for the hard drive'?

The hard drive allows you to download extra content for your games. In graw and gears of war this means extra maps. PGR3 this means more cars to drive. Without the hard drive you can't take advantage of that feature. Also you can't get hold of demo's and videos of upcoming games and will have to rely on the purchase of a magazine to get demo's of games. Its silly to have a 360 without a hard drive because you'll be missing out on so much as a result of not having one.

Get the deal from game and a hard drive from scan (cheapest place at the moment)

    I'll be happy then.

Bear in mind if you buy the core there may be some games that you won't be able to play in the future. I believe the last Final Fantasy game was one of them.

I don't use it. I just have a standard connection through a router.

The first one you linked to is what you will need. A straight through patch cable. The second cable is a crossover which only be any good if you only had the internet going through your pc instead of your router. Have you still got your mind set on the core console out of interest or have you changed your mind?

If you are getting a premium, there is an ethernet cable in the box.
