    Compatibility Issues with the PS3

am planning to buy a Playstation3 this year but i have a few questions re: compatibility on some games...ive checked the "List of Compatibile Games" on the Sony website and i found something. for instance The King Of Fighters2003 has Compatibility Level 3 (meanining "no known issues to date") while the newer NeoGeo Battle Coliseum has Level 1 which means "should play but with noticeable issues". and just to make a comparison: Tekken5 has Level 3 while the newer Soul Calibur3 has level 1. (both are from Namco!) why is that so? (even the Street Fighter EX2 Plus on PS1 has Level 3.) why do you think this is the case? what have they done with the PS3?

they've removed the ps2 cpu from it, so games are emulated in software

    and it's a so-so emulator

The differences are down to programming techniques, if they followed Sony's guidelines to the letter, the games will play with no issues, if they added a lot of tweaks then they'll have issues.

But being a software emulator it can and will be updated and improved and you'll be able to play more of the back-catalogue

sony have said not to expect more games to be added to the list for a while

and backward compatibility matters less & less as more & more games are released for the new console (hands up if you still play ps1 games on ps2)

While I didn't expect any changes to European backwards compatibility for a while, if at all (), could you link me to that Sony announcement you just referenced, please, directhex?

Saying that 'improving European PS2 backwards compatibility won't be a focus' is kinda ambiguous, but that's the last statement from Sony I've seen (and that was the end of February!).

    that's the one

they've already gone on record to say it doesn't matter if games like metal gear solid 2 don't work, because the sequel is fine. and cynics would suggest that any game with a ps3 sequel in the works will NOT ever emulate well (e.g. singstar)

well, as i understand the PS3 in the first place SHOULD be compatible with most PS2 & PS1 games. am aware of them saying that backward compatibility might not be a "priority" but i hope they would do so in the firmware updates. if they don't the fans will not be happy. put it that way.
